Martis combines sacred architecture, museums, historic civil architecture and a landscape with deep valleys. Churches and sacred architecture

One of the notable religious buildings is the Chiesa di San Leonardo in Martis. It is one of the smallest Romanesque churches in Sardinia. Those interested in church architecture can discover the town’s Romanesque heritage here.

The Chiesa di San Pantaleo is considered the most complete and coherent example of the Italian Gothic style introduced to Sardinia before the Aragonese conquest, before the Gothic-Catalan style became widespread there. Its architecture comprises three naves separated by pillars, groin vaults and a large rose window aligned with the portal. Here, you can consider both the historical style and the church interior itself together.

Museums and regional culture

The museums also deepen the cultural side of Martis. The Museo S. Pantaleo is housed in the presbytery of the 17th-century Chiesa di San Giovanni. It contains the painting “Miracolo di San Pantaleo” from 1595 by Andrea Lusso. The ground floor of Casa Puliga-Dettori also houses the exhibition on agro-pastoral civilisation. Sacred spaces, a dated work of art and a theme from rural life thus come together at different museum and exhibition venues.

Literature and changing cultural events

The Ethno’s Festival Letterario includes literary presentations, meetings with authors, creative workshops, musical readings and theatre events. For visitors who wish to combine their stay with literature and performing or musical formats, this programme expands Martis’s cultural themes to include literature, music and theatre. The Museo Paleobotanico serves as an information point for the Ethno’s Festival Letterario and as a venue for temporary exhibitions.

Historic centre and local identity

In the historic centre of Martis, the civil architecture preserves distinctive cornices, wrought-iron balconies, monumental portals and traditional roof terraces. Martis’s traditional identity also includes refined costumes made from white and black fabrics. Architecture and dress therefore create two different accents: one in the built character of the town and the other in its visible regional tradition.

Valleys and Cascata di Triulintas

The area around Martis contains deep valleys carved into volcanic and sedimentary rock. Access to the Cascata di Triulintas is marked by the signposted path “sentiero storico-ambientale mulino Triulintas”.
