Eremo di Santa Rosalia and spiritual heritage

The Eremo di Santa Rosalia alla Quisquina was built to protect the first cave in which Santa Rosalia lived. The museum tour conveys the life of the hermits who lived there and leads, among other places, through the cells, kitchen, refectory and crypt. The grotto and sanctuary of the Eremo di Santa Rosalia alla Quisquina are associated with daily times from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Hiking trails for different day plans

The Itinerarium Rosaliae comprises nine stages of approximately 10 to 26 km each and passes, among other places, through Santo Stefano Quisquina and the Eremo di Santa Rosalia. The Sentiero della Quercia Grande is 2.2 km long, has an elevation difference of 110 m and takes 1 hour and 30 minutes to walk. The Sentiero Pizzo della Rondine extends over 5.9 km, has an elevation difference of 376 m and takes 2 hours and 50 minutes to walk. The Sentiero Donna is a 680 m-long, level circular trail with an elevation difference of 15 m and a walking time of 30 minutes. The different distances provide a concrete basis when you want to choose daily stages according to length and elevation difference.

Oak forest, summit views and rural architecture

The Sentiero della Quercia Grande leads through a lush oak forest connected with the history and legends surrounding Santa Rosalia. The trail leads to the Quercia Grande, which is considered a monumental tree and is a pilgrimage destination. In the upper section of the Sentiero Pizzo della Rondine, the trail splits into an easier branch and a more challenging ascent branch leading along the ridge. Both branches meet again at the summit; along the way, there are views over large parts of Sicily.

The Sentiero dei Marcati e di li Cumuneddi begins at Cancello Galluzzo on the S.P. 24 between Cammarata and Santo Stefano di Quisquina. The starting point is shortly after the turnoff to Buonanotte in the direction of Santo Stefano. The trail leads through areas of rural architecture and the Eremo della Quisquina.

Nature and practical information

The protected area of the Riserva Naturale Orientata Monte Cammarata also extends into Santo Stefano Quisquina; 33.19% of the total area of 2,106.90 ha lies within this municipality. At the Sentiero Donna, there is a car park, a paved wheelchair-accessible path, a handrail for blind visitors and toilets.

Teatro Andromeda and local specialities

The Teatro Andromeda was built almost entirely by hand from the 1970s onwards by the shepherd and sculptor Lorenzo Reina. Every year, the summer solstice is celebrated at the Teatro Andromeda; during the celebration, the sun appears precisely aligned through the opening in the background of the stage. The Sagra del Formaggio is a gastronomic event in Santo Stefano Quisquina at which local dairy products are celebrated with tastings and performances.
