Eraclea Minoa between Ancient History and Coastline

Eraclea Minoa brings together, within a small area, an ancient cityscape and the bright coastline of Capo Bianco. The archaeological area lies on a plateau above the coast and extends across the 75-metre-high headland of Capo Bianco. The white limestone cliff coast projects into the sea and gives the site its distinctive profile. This creates a destination where archaeological remains, coastal views and a unique landscape are closely connected.

Ancient Traces Above the Sea

The ancient theatre of Eraclea Minoa dates from the 4th century BC and faces the sea. A temporary roof has been erected over the theatre to counteract the deterioration caused by its location by the sea and exposure to the wind. On the upper terrace of the archaeological area, you can also see the remains of a sanctuary dedicated to a female deity.

The Antiquarium is located at the entrance to the archaeological area. There, a selection of significant finds illustrates the history of the city, including figurative pottery, terracotta statuettes and household objects. Outside the city walls lies the necropolis of Eraclea Minoa, which has yielded evidence dating from the 6th to the 4th century BC. Visitors interested in the development of ancient settlements, religious sites and archaeological details can use this to broaden the scope of their visit.

Capo Bianco, Beach and Coastal Landscape

The stratotype of Eraclea Minoa emerges beneath the coastal cliff. The cliff separates the ruins of the ancient Greek city of Eraclea Minoa from Capo Bianco beach. The beach itself has light, very fine, golden-coloured sand. Wind-shaped dunes lie between the beach and the pine forest, so the coastal area is characterised not only by its open position on the sea but also by a variety of landscapes.

Off the coast, extensive stands of Posidonia oceanica form underwater meadows. In the regional surroundings of Eraclea Minoa, the Riserva Naturale Foce del Fiume Platani nature reserve also extends into the areas of Cattolica Eraclea and Ribera. It protects coastal habitats, sandy beaches, dune systems and habitats for migratory birds. The natural area therefore extends beyond the immediate beach and also appeals to visitors who wish to include coastal ecology, dune landscapes and birdwatching in their trip.

On Foot from the Archaeological Area to the Beach

Capo Bianco beach can be reached on foot through the pine forest of Eraclea Minoa or via a path that begins at the archaeological museum and runs along the steep slope. Another route follows the steep slope of Capo Bianco from the car park of the archaeological area. A small downhill path leads to the beach and the mouth of the Platani. The two routes described provide different reference points for finding your way between the excavation site, the coast and the river mouth.
