Adrano between the Castle, the Simeto and Sicilian History

Adrano lies on a lava plateau overlooking the valley of the Simeto River. The town combines archaeological evidence, distinctive historic buildings, a large urban green space and festive traditions. This makes it possible to view Sicily here across several eras: from early settlement traces to events that shape public spaces.

Archaeology and Architectural History

The Museo archeologico di Adrano is located in the Castello Normanno di Adrano. It preserves and displays archaeological collections from the Neolithic period (6500–3500 BC) to the Middle Ages (11th century AD). These are complemented by historical, art-historical, ethno-anthropological and bibliographic collections. For visitors who want to understand history not only through individual monuments but also in chronological depth, this museum offers a concentrated introduction to the city.

The Teatro Vincenzo Bellini was inaugurated in 1846 after an approximately ten-year renovation phase from 1834 to 1846. Its façade is designed in the Liberty style, giving the building a clearly recognizable architectural character.

Adrano’s older history also remains tangible in the surrounding area. Adranon was founded at the initiative of Dionysius I around 400 BC in a strategic location in the Simeto Valley. In Contrada Mendolito, eight kilometers from the present-day city of Adrano, lies the archaeological zone of the Città Sicula del Mendolito. The Città del Mendolito is located on a basalt terrace on the eastern bank of the Simeto and covers approximately 80 hectares. Its southern city gate is flanked by two horseshoe-shaped towers and dates to the second half of the 6th century BC.

Green Spaces and the Landscape along the Simeto

The Giardino della Vittoria provides a place to pause between the historical topics. Covering 35,000 square meters, it is the largest green space in the city of Adrano. The landscape continues along the Simeto with varied geology: around the Ponte dei Saraceni, waterfalls, gorges and lava flows follow one another.

The medieval Ponte dei Saraceni has withstood the forces of the Simeto for around a thousand years. The natural area also includes Parco dell'Etna, which encompasses the municipality of Adrano as well.

Festive Days on Piazza Umberto

On Piazza Umberto, festive culture takes two different forms. The Diavolata, a performance dating from the seventeenth century, takes place in the late morning. It has been renewed for 250 years and passed down from generation to generation. Its Sicilian name is “I Diavulazzi ‘i Pasqua”.

The symbolic Volata dell'Angelo ceremony takes place on Piazza Umberto on August 3 at around 8 p.m. Beforehand, the procession carrying the statue of the saint passes through the town’s streets. On this occasion, the procession and ceremony are therefore integral parts of the festival’s proceedings.

Practical Information for Visiting the Museum

The Museo archeologico del Castello Normanno di Adrano is open as follows: Monday to Saturday from 09:00 to 19:00, and Sundays and public holidays from 09:00 to 13:30. Adrano therefore offers both cultural visits that can be planned in advance and insights into traditional public festivities.
