Misterbianco combines lively festive traditions with traces of a long history. Sacred art, protected archaeological remains and Campanarazzu provide tangible settings for the town’s history.
Art, Archaeology and Historic Traces in Misterbianco
The Museo di Arte Sacra is located in the crypt of the Chiesa Madre of Misterbianco. A telephone or email reservation is required for visits. In the Erbe Bianche area are the remains of a Greek fortification and a Roman building; both are under direct archaeological protection. The remains of Roman baths in Piazza della Resistenza and those of a Roman aqueduct in Via Garibaldi are also under direct archaeological protection. The protected remains belong to different historical periods: the fortification is Greek, while the building, baths and aqueduct are Roman. The archaeological sites are therefore spread across Erbe Bianche, Piazza della Resistenza and Via Garibaldi within the town of Misterbianco.
The history of Campanarazzu includes the Antica Chiesa Madre, which cannot currently be visited because extraordinary maintenance work is ongoing. A painting from this old Chiesa Madre was probably located there next to the baptistery; it dates from the first half of the 17th century and therefore from the period before the Mount Etna eruption in March 1669.
Carnival, Craftsmanship and Local Festivals
The Carnival of Misterbianco is rooted in ancient traditions and is associated with the “Costumi più belli di Sicilia”. The costumes are created in local craft workshops, which work on them for a year. This year-long work by local workshops makes costume production a long-term part of the festival preparations. Anyone interested in design, festival culture and the craft traditions surrounding Sicilian events will find a clear cultural focus of the town here.
The Feast of the Madonna degli Ammalati also has its roots in the history of Misterbianco. The old town centre was destroyed by the Mount Etna eruption in March 1669. As part of the event, the municipality plans a street-food area in Via Madonna degli Ammalati from 11 September to 13 September 2026.
The Museo del Carnevale is located in the Stabilimento Monaco. Misterbianco’s municipal tourism and town-promotion service coordinates the municipal information point and organises the town’s most important public events.
Campanarazzu and Historical Memory
The park and oak grove of Campanarazzu escaped the 1669 eruption and preserve the memory of the old town centre for the inhabitants of Misterbianco. The Campanarazzu route and a course extending to the end of Via Campanarazzu are also connected with the hamlet of Madonna degli Ammalati in Misterbianco.
