Sant'Alfio offers you an unusual change of landscape within a small area: in the municipality on the eastern slopes of Mount Etna stands the millennia-old chestnut tree Castagno dei Cento Cavalli. The extensive area of Sant'Alfio stretches from 400 to 3,300 metres. Within just a few kilometres, there is both Mediterranean maquis and a lava desert. The difference in altitude shapes this contrast.

Between the Chestnut Tree and Lava Flows

The volcanic character is particularly vivid in the imposing lava flow of 1865, which formed the Monti Sartorius. The Grotta dei Ladroni and Grotta dei Tre Livelli caves are also located in the vicinity of Sant'Alfio. The lava flow and the caves complement the chestnut tree with further tangible landscape features on Mount Etna.

Sant'Alfio can be reached within a few minutes from the Giarre motorway toll plaza. The beaches Spiaggia Fondachelo and Spiaggia Praiola are also located nearby. The two beaches provide a separate coastal connection alongside the natural features on the eastern slopes of Mount Etna.

Church, Festival and Regional History

A distinctive cultural feature is the façade of the Church of Saints Alfio, Filadelfo and Cirino. The black Etna stone gives the church façade its distinctive appearance and visibly connects the sacred building with the volcanic landscape. It was made entirely of black Etna stone after the First World War. The celebration in honour of these three saints takes place on the last Sunday in April; as part of the celebration, there is a procession featuring the statues and relics. The last Sunday in April is a movable date within the month and therefore does not fall on a fixed date. The church and the celebration are jointly dedicated to Alfio, Filadelfo and Cirino.

The Palazzetto Bonaventura monument is located in the immediate vicinity of Sant'Alfio. The Palazzo Corvaja palace and the Villa Manganelli museum are also located nearby. Schisò Castle is likewise located in the vicinity of Sant'Alfio. Palazzetto Bonaventura is a monument, Palazzo Corvaja is a palace, Villa Manganelli is a museum and Schisò Castle is a castle.

Traditional Cuisine and a Festive Date

At the agriturismi in the area around Sant'Alfio, you can sample typical products of traditional cuisine; traditional recipes are reworked for this purpose. The reinterpretation of traditional recipes combines typical regional products with the area's traditional cuisine. The products and recipes belong to the traditional cuisine of the area around Sant'Alfio.

For the event “Ciliegia Gioiello dell'Etna”, the 15th edition was scheduled for 4, 5 and 6 July 2025. The July date falls clearly later in the year than the celebration on the last Sunday in April. The three days form a continuous event period.
