San Michele Di Ganzaria combines cultural heritage with religious routes and local customs. Museum and Sacred Architecture

With video screens, multimedia information panels and a virtual reality headset, the Museo della Ganzaria enables a virtual exploration of the archaeological area of Piano Cannelle. It also presents archaeological, ethnological and anthropological objects documenting the life of the community of San Michele di Ganzaria.

The Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo is one of the rare examples of Gothic-Cistercian architecture in Sicily. In the 19th century, it was embellished with stucco and decorations, including frescoes by Francesco and Giovanni Vaccaro from 1835. The Chiesa di San Giuseppe was built in the 16th century and features stucco decorations in the nave with a Corinthian order.

The Chiesa di San Giuseppe also houses a 16th-century oil painting on canvas: the Madonna greca di S. Maria di Odigitria, created by an unknown artist. Its arrival by sea symbolizes the expulsion of the Albanians from their homeland and is considered a tangible sign of the community’s Greek-Albanian origins. The Chiesa del Rosario was built in the second half of the 16th century and renovated in the 18th century.

The Chiesa del Monte Calvario was built between the late 17th and early 18th centuries, probably in the late Baroque style. Only parts of Castello Gravina remain: the surrounding walls, a balcony on the upper floor and a section of the former chemin de ronde. The Bevaio Canale Cornu, a cast-iron fountain, was restored in 2025 and returned to its original location. The Fontana di Giambattista Nicastro features a marble group of swans, a basin above it, three intertwined marble dolphins arranged in a spiral, a smaller basin and a marble finial.

Pilgrimage Routes and Local Foods

The Cammino di San Giacomo in Sicilia leads to San Michele Di Ganzaria. Pilgrims can stop there, have their pilgrim card stamped and visit the Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo. The Good Friday procession leads from the Chiesa Madre to the Chiesa del Monte Calvario; it is accompanied by the “lamentaturi”, a group of men who walk the entire route carrying the coffin of Christ.

After the procession, the traditional “pasta di San Francesco” is offered for tasting in front of the Chiesa Madre, a blessed dish made with peas, young broad beans, lentils, beans and wild fennel. A traditional dish is also distributed as part of the celebration of Santa Lucia: cuccìa made from cooked wheat, seasoned with oil and garlic.

Festivals with Historical Significance

The San Giuseppe festival is celebrated on March 19. On the Sunday closest to this date, a traditional auction festival is held beside the church for the gifts donated to Saint Joseph. Magico Medioevo takes place every year and commemorates the founding of San Michele Di Ganzaria in 1534, as well as the meeting between Baron Antonio Gravina and the Albanian refugees represented by Nicola Bisurca and Antonio Figlia.
