Biancavilla: Churches, Mount Etna Landscapes and Sicilian Character
Biancavilla combines religious heritage, local tradition and the landscape of Mount Etna. The Biancavilla area lies entirely within the “Sistema Etna”. Biancavilla is also known by the nickname “the third gateway to Mount Etna”, “La porta del sole”. The Italian expression can be translated as “Gate of the Sun”. In addition to its connection with the landscape, sacred buildings, festive events and a local sweet shape the character of Biancavilla.
Routes into the Mount Etna Landscape
From Biancavilla, routes lead to the Pista Altomontana and the Rifugio Monte Scala. Biancavilla is also the starting point for scenic cycling routes that pass through Parco dell’Etna. For individual day planning, routes and cycling trails can be saved as separate plans. A day in the Mount Etna landscape can therefore begin at one of the two route destinations or on a cycling route through the park. Biancavilla remains the shared starting point.
Historic Churches and Architectural Details
An important religious point of reference is the Basilica Collegiata Pontificia Minore Santuario Santa Maria dell’Elemosina. It is dedicated to Biancavilla’s patron saint. The Church of Beata Maria Vergine dell’Angelo Annunziata was built in the 17th century and blessed in 1604 by the Bishop of Catania. Its floor plan consists of three naves divided into four bays; the interior is decorated with paintings by Giuseppe Tamo da Brescia. In the case of the Annunziata, the construction period and blessing are dated differently: the building is assigned to the 17th century, while the blessing took place in 1604.
Santa Maria della Mercede also dates back to the 17th century: the church was built by the Mercedarians. Its exterior architecture is an example of smaller-scale Sicilian Baroque architecture. The San Francesco monastery also has a cloister completely decorated with 18th-century paintings by Giuseppe Tamo da Brescia. Mercede dates its construction to the 17th century, while the paintings in the San Francesco cloister belong to the 18th century. Giuseppe Tamo da Brescia thus appears both in the Annunziata and in the cloister of San Francesco.
Festivals, Origins and a Specialty
The Feast of Maria SS. dell’Elemosina is celebrated on the last Sunday in August and on October 3 and 4. During the patronal celebrations in October, the historic Arbëreshë performance brings Biancavilla’s origins back to life. For calendar planning, the August date falls at the end of the month; the two other feast days fall on October 3.
Schiumone, known in Sicilian as “u scumuni”, is part of the local character. This traditional Biancavilla sweet is a semifreddo with an outer layer of chocolate ice cream and a foamy, egg-based zabaglione filling. The Sicilian short form “u scumuni” is part of its local name.
Planning by Time and Landscape
The landscape connection is represented by the routes to the Pista Altomontana and the Rifugio Monte Scala, as well as the cycling routes through Parco dell’Etna. The churches complement this setting with their construction history, spatial layout and paintings. The historic Arbëreshë performance is added to the festival calendar, while Schiumone brings the local character together in the form of a specific sweet.
