Viagrande brings together a volcanic landscape, nature observation and historical landmarks within a compact thematic area. If you are planning a trip to Sicily and appreciate culture and accessible natural history alongside landscape experiences, the town offers various options for planning your days.

Monte Serra and the landscape around Viagrande

Part of the municipality of Viagrande lies within Parco dell’Etna. The landscape comprises gentle hills, some of which were formed from layers of ancient lava flows lying on top of one another. Monte Serra is a prominent reference point: it is an adventitious volcanic cone near the centre of Viagrande. The mountain acquired its characteristic horseshoe shape through the collapse of the summit area of the crater and one flank of the volcanic cone.

The most direct route to the summit is a staircase consisting of around 350 lava-stone steps. This particular route makes Monte Serra a distinctive landscape attraction for visitors who want to view volcanic formations not only from a distance. At the same time, the mountain remains embedded in the area’s distinctive geology: hills, lava and volcanic cones jointly shape the impression of the town.

Butterflies and tropical insects

Casa delle Farfalle del Monte Serra is an aviary with tropical plants and flowers where butterflies are kept. The visit includes an interesting lesson about the world of insects and the biology of butterflies.

Casa delle Farfalle also houses invertebrates from tropical forests. These include stick insects, walking leaves and giant beetles. The combination of plants, butterflies and unusual invertebrates adds a distinctly different perspective to Viagrande’s natural attractions than the volcanic landscape of Monte Serra.

Green breaks and facilities for different age groups

Parco Aniante is a green oasis in the heart of Viagrande. The park has an inclusive playground with shock-absorbing surfacing and equipment that can be used by children with different abilities. The outdoor fitness area is also interesting when planning time together: it offers exercise stations for both younger and older people.

This allows Viagrande to be viewed from several perspectives. An interest in natural history leads to Casa delle Farfalle, geological themes to Monte Serra, while Parco Aniante provides space for a break and exercise.

Historical traces in the town

The town’s art-historical heritage is also part of Viagrande’s character. Chiesa dell’Idria was inaugurated on 14 January 1744. Viagrande’s art-historical heritage also includes the remains of Chiesa Antica. Both landmarks give the town’s history a visible historical dimension and complement the natural experiences with a cultural attraction.
