Randazzo on Mount Etna: Lava Stone, Museums and Nature Trails

Randazzo lies on the northern slope of Mount Etna. Its volcanic character is evident in the townscape, with streets and lanes made of lava stone. At the same time, the Circumetnea railway connects Randazzo directly with Catania. In the town, churches, museums and the city wall are key points of reference; in the Mount Etna area, trails cross old and more recent lava flows. This makes it possible to plan town visits and hikes on the volcano as separate activities for different days.

Churches with distinctive architectural character

The Chiesa di San Nicolò dates from the 13th century. Inside is a marble statue of San Nicola di Bari by Antonello Gagini, created in 1523. The year 1523 clearly places the statue well after the church was built.

The Chiesa San Martino also has a distinctive feature: its preserved 13th-century bell tower displays paired two-coloured bifora and trifora windows. These terms refer to window openings divided into two and three parts, respectively. The Chiesa di Santa Maria, by contrast, relies on the visual impact of its material. Its exterior consists entirely of black lava-stone blocks; inside is the Byzantine fresco Madonna del Pileri.

Archaeology and natural history

The Museo archeologico Paolo Vagliasindi is housed in the Castello svevo, a tower incorporated into the city wall. There you can see finds from the 6th to 4th centuries BC, most of which come from Sant’Anastasia in Randazzo. The museum’s location also makes the tower within the city wall the architectural setting for the archaeological exhibition.

The Museo Civico di Scienze Naturali displays the Priolo ornithological collection, with around 2,000 specimens representing approximately 400 different species. This focus is complemented by a palaeontological hall containing fossils, minerals, rocks, shells and remains of Pleistocene wildlife. The same museum therefore brings together specimens from the world of birds alongside geological and palaeontological objects.

Lava flows, beech forest and river gorges

In the Mount Etna area around Randazzo, trails cross old and more recent lava flows. The Mount Etna trails lead to Monte Spagnolo and its beech forest, as well as to the Grotta del Gelo. The Sentiero naturalistico Burrò is a visitor trail in this area. Trail 717 and its variant 717A provide access to Mount Etna from the volcano’s slope facing Randazzo. For hikers, the geologically shaped trail sections therefore differ from the landscape destinations of Monte Spagnolo, the beech forest and the Grotta del Gelo.

Vineyards, olive groves and orchards lie on the lower mountain slopes around Randazzo; traditional palmenti and olive mills can also be found there. The Alcantara River Park is located nearby. Its numerous paths and trails follow the bends of the river and lead to scenic, sometimes seemingly wild places such as the famous gorges. Agriculture and traditional facilities shape the surroundings on the mountain slopes, while the trails in the river park follow the course of the Alcantara.
