Elevation and landscape around Aidone

Aidone lies on a hill in the Erei mountain range, amid a landscape of rolling hills. From here, you can enjoy wide views over the surrounding countryside and the Gornalunga Valley. The town’s elevation shapes the first impression of the place and makes Aidone a destination where landscape and local history stand closely side by side. The excavated remains include the agora, the theatre, residential areas, a paved road and kilns used for pottery production. The various groups of finds convey a picture of public life, housing, roads and craft production, without requiring you to focus on a single building.

The medieval heritage is also spread across several notable sites. Castellaccio began as an Arab outpost and observation point and was later restored and fortified by the Normans, who transformed it into a castle. Torre Adelasia dates from the Norman period and towers over Piazza Cordova. Castel di Gresti preserves a medieval fortified settlement with a largely intact tower, parts of a palace complex and rooms carved into the rock. The San Domenico Monastery was home to an intense religious life for four centuries.

Festivals and religious traditions

The Festa di San Filippo takes place on 1 May. For this festival, pilgrims carry votive candles to the sanctuary. During Aidone’s Easter festival, the Giunta, the Santoni appear: hollow wooden or papier-mâché figures representing the twelve apostles. The Santoni are about three metres tall. Costumed santari carry them. Visitors interested in religious customs, processions and the distinctive imagery of local festivals will encounter different forms of expression in Aidone, each with its own character.

Typical specialties from Aidone

Frasquatul, a traditional Aidone dish based on Plocamais polenta, is also part of the local identity. Biscotto aidonese is a traditional Sicilian agricultural and food product made from flour, sugar and egg. Both specialties add a culinary perspective to the historical and scenic experience.
