Regalbuto: Sacred Art, Lago Pozzillo and Sicilian Traditions

Regalbuto combines sacred art, religious traditions and the natural landscape around Lago Pozzillo. Churches and a museum face a woodland landscape and a high-rope course; in addition, the Festa di San Vito is a religious event celebrated annually. Sacred Art and Notable Churches

The Museo degli Argenti in the Chiesa Madre di San Basilio in Regalbuto houses a collection of monstrances, chalices, ciboria, reliquaries, processional crosses and incense boats. Each work is presented in its liturgical and symbolic context. Those interested in sacred art will therefore find a combination of individual valuable objects and their religious context here.

The Chiesa di San Sebastiano preserves an original majolica floor with surviving tiles, several statues of saints and valuable liturgical furnishings. In the Chiesa di Maria SS. delle Grazie, high-quality stucco work, particularly in the apse, shapes the interior; three fine frescoes are located on the vault. The Chiesa della Madonna del Carmelo has documented origins dating back at least to the early years of the 15th century. Its octagonal ground plan is considered architecturally unique in the surrounding area.

The Chiesa di San Sebastiano is historically associated with the Good Friday rites in Regalbuto. The Chiesa di San Vito is also known as the Chiesa dei Cappuccini and lies outside the built-up centre; the Capuchin friars established their base there in 1585. According to local tradition, the Chiesa dei Cappuccini is associated with a miraculous spring that Saint Vitus is said to have brought forth from the ground during his stay in Sicily. Today, relics of Saint Vitus – parts of the skull, an arm and a foot – are kept in the Chiesa Madre in the Cappella della „Fortezza di San Vito“.

Lago Pozzillo and Nature Experiences

At Lago Pozzillo, an extensive woodland area consisting predominantly of eucalyptus trees forms part of the natural landscape. Today, the area is of interest from a natural-history perspective. In this setting, Pozzillo Avventura offers high-altitude adventure courses with structures suspended between the trees.

Pozzillo Avventura is open from March to November on Sundays and public holidays from 10 a.m. until two hours before sunset. Reservations are required from Monday to Saturday. These times give you a specific framework if you would like to include the activity in your stay.

Festa di San Vito in August

The Festa di San Vito is celebrated annually in Regalbuto from 8 August to 11 August. The procession includes participants walking barefoot and richly decorated riders. Together with the connection to the Good Friday rites and the relics of Saint Vitus, the religious character of the town becomes particularly vivid.
