Calvaruso between Sanctuary, Art and Landscape

Calvaruso draws attention to the Santuario Gesù Ecce Homo and a series of sacred artworks. The Santuario Gesù Ecce Homo

The Santuario Gesù Ecce Homo in Calvaruso was built around 1619. The sanctuary houses an Ecce Homo statue made of cypress wood in 1634 by Frate Umile da Petralia.

A bronze Via Crucis from 1984 with 15 stations lines a path leading to the Santuario Gesù Ecce Homo. It was created by the Sicilian artist Biagio Governali. This adds a clearly datable bronze work to the sacred furnishings around the sanctuary.

The cloister and other artworks also form part of the cultural character of the place. The Museo della devozione is located in rooms next to the Santuario Gesù Ecce Homo’s 17th-century cloister. On the right-hand side of a temple is a panel depicting Saint Lucy; it was painted by Marco Antonio Veneziano and bears an inscription with the year 1582. On the main altar of a temple stands a wooden statue of Saint Margaret, carved in 1871 by the Messina artist Michele Cangeri. The materials, artists and dates provide various ways of approaching sacred art.

Pilgrimage Tradition

The Ecce Homo effigy in the sanctuary of Calvaruso, regarded as miraculous, has attracted thousands of pilgrims for around 400 years, especially at Easter and in summer.

Historical Sites in the Surrounding Area

There are also destinations with a historical character beyond the sanctuary. The ancient site Ruderi di una antica Badia is located in the area around Calvaruso. The ruins of Forte dei Centri and the il Castellaccio castle are located nearby. The Monte di Pietà palace is also in the surrounding area. The range therefore extends from an ancient site through ruins and a castle to a palace.

Beaches and Mountains as Additional Travel Highlights
