Mistretta is home to a historic center that is one of the largest and best-preserved historic centers in Sicily. Mistretta is also one of the 24 municipalities of the Parco dei Nebrodi. This gives you a place to experience both culture and nature.

The Muro della Vita, now renamed Via della Bellezza, displays 40 different artistic expressions made of clay. Visitors can walk along it and view various techniques and themes. The Museo della Fauna e dello Scalpellino displays hundreds of stuffed specimens from the “Giambona” collection and explains the development of Sicily’s wildlife. Established in 2015, the Mu.Sca section complements the museum with techniques used by stonemasons and old tools for stoneworking. The Museo delle Tradizioni Silvo-pastorali “Giuseppe Cocchiara” documents Sicily’s pastoral way of life through objects, tools and documents relating to forestry and grazing.

At the Museo Civico “E. Ortolani”, the archaeological finds range from the Sicels and Siceliots through the Romans and Byzantines to the Middle Ages. The museum also has an art gallery featuring a “Flagellation of Christ” attributed to the Flemish painter Matthias Stom. The Chiesa della Madonna della Luce has a hand-painted majolica floor from Santo Stefano di Camastra dating from the mid-19th century.

The Chiesa di S. Lucia (Matrice) houses marble works by the Gagini family: an altarpiece created in 1552, a baptismal font and a statue of Saint Lucy dated 1575. It also preserves medieval traces, including remains of the original façade, a terracotta floor, a carved base and part of a column painted with figures of saints in 1488. The Chiesa di San Sebastiano contains the “Vara” by the Li Volsi family, dating from 1610, and an associated statue by Noè Marullo.

Historic Sites and Practical Information

The historic diversity continues beyond the churches: in 1874, the architect Giovan Battista Filippo Basile was contacted to design the Cimitero Monumentale of Mistretta. Access is available on request; the route from the entrance is equipped with ramps and suitable walkways for people with disabilities. The Abbeveratoio del Palo is one of Sicily’s largest monumental cattle troughs and was completed in 1860 by the stonemasons Giaimo and Pellegrino.

The Porta Palermo preserves an old city gate with a monumental arch in the Baroque style and a viewing terrace. The surviving remains of the Castello di Mistretta include traces of a church, a cistern and underground rooms. The Chiesa della SS. Trinità has an elongated octagonal interior with a tent-vaulted ceiling; its stucco decoration was created in 1759–1760 by Gioacchino Cerrito based on a design by the priest-architect Benedetto Dia. The Valle delle Cascate includes the “cinquecento Ponte Zu Pardu”, a 16th-century bridge.

Religious traditions also shape the annual calendar. The Chiesa di San Giovanni is the setting for Mistretta’s traditional Good Friday procession. The Feast of the Madonna della Luce is an ancient religious tradition; on September 8, a procession passes through the town to the sanctuary dedicated to the Madonna della Luce.

Getting to Mistretta

If you are travelling by car, you can reach Mistretta from Messina or Palermo via the A20 exit near Santo Stefano di Camastra and the turnoff for Mistretta on the SS 117. Mistretta does not have its own railway station. The nearest rail connection is Santo Stefano di Camastra-Mistretta station on the Palermo–Messina railway line.
