Lingua Between Wetland and Island History

Lingua combines a distinctive natural landscape with tangible traces from different periods. The Stagno di Lingua is the only wetland in the Aeolian Archipelago. The Laghetto di Lingua is designated as a Special Protection Area. The submerged remains of an ancient Roman-era salt-production facility are also preserved on the bed of the natural Laghetto di Lingua. Nature observation and archaeology therefore come together here in an unusual thematic context, without reducing Lingua to just one aspect.

Museums with Bronze Age and Everyday Stories

The museum tour in Lingua at the Museo Archeologico displays finds from the Bronze Age village of Portella. The Museo Etno-antropologico offers a different approach to the past. It is located in a house from the first half of the 19th century, where an old olive press, a stone grain mill, a traditional oven, and a furnished bedroom have been preserved.

Roman Traces in Contrada Barone

In Contrada Barone, the Roman thermal complex was in use during the first centuries of the imperial period. The remains include a frigidarium as well as remnants of systems for heating water. A frigidarium is an area for cold baths. Together with the ancient salt-production facility at the Laghetto, the thermal complex broadens the historical view of Lingua with evidence of Roman use and technical installations.

Two Beaches, Two Different Coastal Landscapes

Lingua also offers a variety of landscapes for beach days. Spiaggia del Lungomare di Lingua is a pebble beach with medium-sized stones and shallow water. While snorkeling, you can observe various organisms typical of shallow coastal areas there. Spiaggia del Porticciolo di Lingua is a small beach with sand and small pebbles; its seabed consists of pebbles and sand and is rich in small fish. These differences can help you define the focus of your days more precisely: are you more interested in shallow coastal waters and observation, or in a small beach with a sandy and pebbly seabed?

Orientation and Museum Visit

A footpath connects the center of Santa Marina with the Lingua district. Advance reservations are required for the Museo Civico and Museo Archeologico in Lingua. Visiting hours are Monday to Saturday from 09:00 to 12:30.
