Raccuja in the Nebrodi Mountains

Raccuja is located in the Monti Nebrodi area and combines mountain scenery with history, architecture, and regional culture. The town brings together buildings from different periods with traditional silk processing and a local specialty celebrated in August. The origins of Raccuja are traced back to the late 11th century, when the Normans came to Sicily and conquered the island.

Historic buildings in the town

Castello Branciforti stands in the upper part of the built-up area. It covers an extensive rectangular area, consists of a two-story linear structure, and has a two-story round tower at the northeastern corner. Its location was important for controlling the nearby Regia Trazzera.

The town’s religious architecture includes the Chiesa Madre – Santa Maria del Gesù, a 16th-century church, and the Chiesa di San Pietro, which was built around an old medieval tower. The Monastero di San Nicolò dates from the Byzantine period and was rebuilt during the Norman era. On Piazza XXV Aprile, palaces from the 17th century are joined by a valuable 18th-century staircase made entirely of sandstone. The historical references therefore extend from the Byzantine and Norman periods to churches, palaces, and square design from the 16th to the 18th century.

Craftsmanship and routes with historical connections

The Museo della Seta is dedicated to the historic tradition of artisanal silk processing in the Monti Nebrodi. It serves as a place of education and identity-building for rediscovering this craft, which played an important role in the region’s economic history. Important for visitors: The museum offers free guided tours, which take place exclusively by prior reservation.

The Itinerario delle Tholos offers a different perspective. This natural and cultural route leads to small, typical rural structures known as “casotti”; their origins are traced back to the pre-Greek period. However, the Itinerario is not a walkable, well-marked nature trail. The individual tholos structures vary in accessibility and how they can be reached – an important distinction between the route’s cultural interest and its practical walkability. When planning a visit, it is therefore important not to assume that the individual structures are stops along one continuous walk.

Mountain panorama and local specialty

From Raccuja, visitors can enjoy a mountain panorama across a varied landscape stretching from low hills to the mountains of the Nebrodi. This view adds a distinctly scenic dimension to the picture of Raccuja.

The local cuisine also has its own seasonal connection. The Sagra dei maccheroni takes place in August and offers the opportunity to sample artisanal specialties from the local cuisine. At this festival, the maccheroni typical of Raccuja are presented as a traditional specialty: thread-like egg noodles with pork sauce and salted ricotta.
