Pianoconte: Island Trails, Archaeology and Rural Lipari
Pianoconte between the Plateau and Island Trails
The extensive plateau of Pianoconte, dotted with farmhouses, gives the area a distinctly rural character. Prehistoric sites dating from the Late Neolithic and the early phases of the Metal Ages have been discovered on this plateau. If, alongside coastal destinations, you would also like to experience Lipari’s landscapes and early island history, Pianoconte offers a distinct thematic focus for this.
Routes Across the Island
Pianoconte is connected to the town of Lipari by the panoramic road that runs along the entire island. A trekking route leads from Lipari via Pianoconte and Terme San Calogero to Quattropani; a tourist route runs from Lipari via Pianoconte onward towards Quattropani. For planning purposes, it is useful to consider these two types of route separately.
Paths through Valleys and Volcanic Landscapes
A narrow road leads downhill from the turnoff towards Ospedale to the Cave di Caolino. The route passes through narrow valleys to the former, now dried-up, Lake Bagno Secco. The path to Timpone Pataso starts at a bus stop on the Pianoconte–Quattropani road and follows a paved road towards the kaolin mines; a short descent leads to a fumarole field.
Archaeology and Culture in the Surrounding Area
The archaeological sites Zona Archeologica Sarcofagi Greci and Parco Archeologico Diana are located in the immediate vicinity of Pianoconte, as are the Eolian Museum and the Castello di Lipari. This means that several different points of interest are available nearby for a stay focused on culture.
Beaches and Viewpoint
The beaches Spiaggia Valle Muria, Marina Corta and Coral beach are located near Pianoconte. The Panorama da Vulcanello viewpoint is also in the vicinity of Pianoconte. If you would like to combine landscapes, culture and coastal experiences when choosing your hotel, these types of destinations can help structure your plans.
Agriculture and Local Traditions
At the “Tramonti di Eolo” event held by Azienda Agricola Mandarano in Pianoconte from 26 April to 15 July 2025, a path approximately 800 metres long led through fields of grain and capers. At the XXXVII edition of the “Sagra del vino e del pane”, the programme included a guided visit to the mill and palmento of Azienda Agricola Mandarano for schoolchildren. Le Macine is a project by the Cipicchia family featuring a restaurant, fresh-pasta workshop, mill and farm, and conveys an agricultural aspect of the Aeolian Islands.
Pianoconte is particularly interesting if you would like to experience different sides of Lipari during a single stay: the plateau, island trails, archaeological sites, beaches and agriculture each offer their own distinct highlights. When choosing a hotel, you can therefore first decide whether hiking routes, archaeology, the coast or the island’s rural character should be the main focus.
