The Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo was built in the Byzantine style around the 12th century and is the oldest church in Roccalumera.

Churches and Religious Heritage

The religious buildings include the Chiesa del Santissimo Crocifisso, which dates from around 1740. It was once the private chapel at the villa of the scientist Stanislao Cannizzaro. Stanislao Cannizzaro's villa also gives this religious building a specific personal connection. The Chiesa di Santa Maria del Rosario is Roccalumera's main church; since 1674, the Madonna del Rosario has been the town's most important patron saint.

The Chiesa di Santa Maria della Catena was completed in 1893. The Chiesa della Madonna del Carmelo was built in 1938 in the Botteghelle district. Roccalumera's religious history therefore encompasses buildings dating approximately from the 12th century, from around 1740, and from the 19th and 20th centuries. The years 1893 and 1938 mark two later stages of this religious history.

The Torre and Literary Commemoration

The Torre di Roccalumera houses the “Salvatore Quasimodo” Literary Park. The park was established recently in memory of the years Salvatore Quasimodo spent in Roccalumera. For those interested in culture, the Torre combines literary commemoration with historic coastal defense.

The Torre di Roccalumera was built between the 14th and 15th centuries to protect the southern entrance of the Ionian village. During the late-medieval Aragonese period, it served as a coastal outpost.

The structure is cylindrical and well preserved. One window has a pointed, flattened arch framed by limestone and black pumice stone. In addition to its former function, the tower's shape and the choice of materials for the window are part of its architectural history.

Former Work in Allume

There were numerous mines in Allume where potassium alum was extracted. The Filanda Papandrea is a preserved testament to the former silkworm-rearing tradition in Roccalumera. Those interested in former working life will find two specific themes in Allume and at the Filanda Papandrea: potassium alum and silkworm rearing. Mining and silkworm rearing represent different working worlds from the area's earlier history.

Beach with Practical Facilities

The entire beach in Roccalumera is equipped with showers. When planning a beach stay, the availability of showers along the entire beach is a specific practical detail. This information explicitly refers to the entire beach, not just a single section.

Local Tradition in Sciglio

In Sciglio di Roccalumera, the Sagra del Verdello is now a long-standing event held in honor of the Limone Verdello. The festival includes tastings as well as an entertainment program with cabaret and music. The event thus combines its connection to the Limone Verdello with culinary and entertainment elements.
