San Fratello: Sanctuary, Forest and Living Tradition
San Fratello combines a distinctive language culture with sacred architecture, traditional festivals and extensive woodland landscapes. A Gallo-Italic dialect is still spoken here today and is considered a linguistic island of great philological interest. This gives the town both cultural and historical points of interest as well as nature-related attractions to consider when planning your trip.
Sanctuaries, Churches and Local History
The Santuario dei Tre Santi – Alfio, Filadelfio and Cirino – is a sanctuary founded around 1090 in the Norman style on Monte Vecchio. It is considered a monument of national interest. Admission is free; school groups are required to arrange an appointment in advance.
The Chiesa Madre, also known as the Santuario di San Benedetto il Moro, can be regarded as the center of religion, culture and art in San Fratello. It houses the relics of San Benedetto il Moro as well as those of the three saints Alfio, Filadelfio and Cirino. The Chiesa del Crocifisso is a Baroque church with plaster decorations inside and gilded festoons. A stone cross dating from 1664 stands in front of it. The church is currently temporarily closed to the public. The Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta preserves a Baroque cloister.
The Palazzo Mammana is also part of the town's architectural character: the building displays a medieval style, a distinctive tower shape and a vaulted passageway. As it has been classified as unsafe to enter, the Palazzo Mammana can only be viewed from the outside.
The Museo Etno Storico Antropologico “Ermenegildo Latteri” presents the Sanfratellan ritual of Holy Week and the Festa dei Giudei. The museum also includes two residential buildings dating from the year 1000.
Festivals and the Cavallo Sanfratellano
The Festa dei Giudei begins at dawn on Holy Wednesday and ends on Friday evening. During the festival, participants move through San Fratello, play music and take part in balancing competitions. Another link between culture and regional identity is the Mostra-Mercato del Cavallo Sanfratellano. It has been included in Sicily's register of intangible cultural heritage, REIS, and is located at Passo dei Tre in San Fratello, at the Collura estate.
Woodland Landscape and Wildlife
The Bosco di San Fratello lies within the protected area of the Parco Naturale dei Nebrodi. A nature trail for horseback riding runs through the forest; access is free. For nature enthusiasts, the forest is particularly characterized by its wildlife: foxes, wildcats, porcupines, martens, land tortoises and various bird species find a natural habitat here.
The Cavallo Sanfratellano continues to live freely and wild in a woodland area of more than 11,000 hectares. This area lies mainly in the Province of Messina and includes, among others, the municipalities of Acquedolci, Caronia, Militello Rosmarino, Sant'Agata Militello, Sanfratello and Mistretta. The Leccete di Zerbetto, Malo Passo and Fossa del Lupo area includes approximately 250 hectares of holm oak forest in San Fratello.
