Roccella Valdemone: Nature, Archaeology and Church Art

Between Roccella Valdemone and Montalbano Elicona, the Bosco di Malabotta forms a natural area with a species-rich ecosystem of flora and fauna. Roccella Valdemone is home to a marble sculpture of Maria SS. dell'Udienza, created by Gagini between 1540 and 1543. The Chiesa di S. Nicolò is Romanesque in design. Its interior has three naves, a transept, three rectangular apses, twelve monolithic sandstone columns with Corinthian capitals and a wooden ceiling.

Nicolò also preserves a marble relief of the Nativity. It was commissioned from Antonello Gagini on 13 October 1526 and largely executed by his son Giacomo. Together with the marble sculpture of Maria SS. dell'Udienza, it provides a tangible connection to the town's art history without reducing the sacred buildings to individual dates.

Hiking and Destinations in the Surrounding Area

A hike to the summit of Punta di Castelluzzo can begin at Piazza Matrice and is of moderate difficulty. The starting point is therefore directly in Roccella Valdemone; at the same time, the destination leads back to the elevation at whose foot the town lies at 810 metres above sea level. The celebration in honour of Madonna dell'Udienza in Roccella Valdemone includes cultural and social events between 14 and 16 August. A procession takes place on 15 August.
