Capri Leone: Churches, Art and Local Festivals in the Nebrodi

Capri Leone is located in the northern Nebrodi on the far left bank or edge of the Fiumara di Zappulla. The town combines sacred architecture, squares with distinctive sculptures, public art and green paths. Churches, Palaces and Art in the Townscape

The Chiesa Madre was built in the Middle Ages. The Palazzo Cupane is a baronial palace built in the mid-19th century.

The Chiesa di Maria SS. Annunziata has origins dating from between the 14th and 16th centuries. Inside, it houses a marble statue attributed to or documented as being by Antonello Gagini, created between 1533 and 1534. The furnishings also include a processional fercolo with a wooden depiction of the Annunciation dating from the 17th century.

The Santuario di Santa Maria di Tindari stands on the Rocca. The Rocca is a rocky massif that gives its name to the densely populated center. The interior of the sanctuary is carved into the rock and decorated with stained glass. Its current state dates from a renovation in 1986, during which a monumental fiberglass statue of the Virgin Mary by Andrea Trisciuzzi was placed on a high pedestal.

The Chiesa di Sant'Antonio Abate stands at the highest point of the town and frames a panoramic viewpoint. Its simple marble portal from San Marco is a distinctive architectural detail in its own right. On Piazza dei Leoni, a monumental fountain with two lions spouting water from their mouths explains the name of the square. The lioness sculpture there is made of red marble from San Marco and dates from the 15th century.

Contemporary art is also present in the townscape. La Mappa dell'Arte transforms the historic center of Capri Leone into an open-air museum with decentralized exhibitions and installations. The “Muri Parlanti – Street Art Capri Leone” project also includes a mural created by Andrea Sposari in the area in front of the schools in Rocca di Capri Leone.

Hiking Trails, Park and Sporting Events

Parco Urbano Peppino Grasso has hiking trails. The park also includes a large open-air auditorium and a small lake inhabited by ducks.

The Cronoscalata del Leone is a regional cycling time trial. It took place on July 13, 2025, in Rocca di Capri Leone. At the Nebrodi Horses Fest, three days in July were dedicated to equestrian sports; the venue was Piazzale delle Scuole.

Local Cuisine and Events

The 2026 summer program included Sicily Fud Eat Street on July 30, with food stalls on Piazza Gepy Faranda. At the Mare Festival, a show cooking event with tastings of dishes from the sea and mountains was scheduled for August 9. A fish tasting and Sicilian wines were scheduled for the second evening of the Mare Festival on August 11. The Feast of San Costantino was also included in Capri Leone's 2026 summer program.
