San Salvatore di Fitalia: Pilgrimages, Sacred Art and Regional Festivals

San Salvatore di Fitalia is characterized by religious traditions, sacred art, paths along the hill and festivals with a regional character. This gives you a place whose special features can be explored through different interests: culture, pilgrimage traditions, landscapes and local products.

Sacred Sites and a Deep-Rooted History

The Museo delle tradizioni religiose was newly established following the restoration and functional redesign of the former Ospedale S. Calogero. The preserved monuments include the ruins of the Torre del Capitano. The Basilica del Salvator Mundi is considered to have been founded in the Byzantine period.

Its architecture is evident in specific details: since a comprehensive expansion in 1515, the Basilica del Salvator Mundi has had a Latin-cross floor plan with three naves. The basilica also contains a statue of the Madonna della Neve from 1527 by Antonello Gagini. The Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta contains a marble triptych from 1530 by Antonello Gagini depicting the Madonna and Child, Saint Peter and Saint Paul.

Paths to Rocca Pietra Giuda

Nature trails on the slopes of the hill lead to Rocca Pietra Giuda. From there, you can enjoy a panorama of the Aeolian Islands and Mount Etna. Those who enjoy walking can combine the route with an experience of the landscape; the view from the Rocca provides a distinctive highlight alongside the town’s sacred sites.

Pilgrimages and Festivals

The August festival Festa di San Calogero takes place on 19, 20 and 21 August. The traditional “Viaggi” begin on 20 July and continue for a month, taking place every evening as pilgrimages to the Santuario di San Calogero.

For the Pellegrinaggio a Cavallo, participants meet in the locality of “Due Fiumare”, ascend together to the town and pass by the Santuario di San Calogero. An altar with the saint’s relic is set up in Piazza San Calogero; horses, male and female riders pay homage to it and receive the blessing of the officiating priest.

Products and Local Festival Culture

The Sagra della Castagna usually takes place on the last weekend of October. At the Sagra del Miele, alongside the particularly prized honey, a selection of local products from the Fitalia area is presented: oil, strawberries, dairy products, cured meats, bread, desserts and typical dishes. Culinary competitions and presentations of local handicrafts are also held.
