Pettineo: Sicilian History Between Art and Tradition

Pettineo combines a compact historic layout of alleyways, courtyards and historic architecture with a remarkable diversity of art, religious buildings, festivals and local traditions. This gives you the opportunity to experience Sicilian history not only through individual buildings, but also through religious customs, contemporary works and the Limone Seccagno.

Historic Buildings and Religious Art

The Castello dei Ventimiglia has historical origins dating back to the 13th century. Today, only a few remains survive, visible from a distance as you approach Pettineo. The Convento dei Cappuccini was founded in 1579. It includes a seedling nursery consisting of eight basins, considered the only surviving structure of its kind in Sicily. The monastery also houses a late Baroque altarpiece featuring the painting “Madonna degli Angeli,” created in 1722 by Guglielmo Borremans.

The Chiesa di San Sebastiano was built after 1580 on what was presumably an existing shrine dedicated to the martyr. During its reconstruction, it was designed as a three-aisled basilica with colonnades, capitals, arcades and windows. The Statua della Costanza, an allegorical statue representing strength, stands in Piazza Duomo. It was created in 1639 by the sculptor and engineer Geronimo d’Ajeni from Pettineo.

The Torre Migaido complex also forms part of the town’s historic character. It includes a fortified structure dating from the 14th century, with a keep and a chapel whose frescoes depict Christ Pantocrator. The Ponte Migaido was built in 1750 by the architect Giovan Battista Vaccarini. Historically, it was a crossing on the Antica via del Grano between the Tyrrhenian Sea and central Sicily.

Art in the Townscape

Pettineo combines historic architecture with contemporary art. The Museo Domestico brings visitors and residents together through contemporary works of art kept in private spaces. In Via Credenza, you will find the mural “Flusso dinamico” by Andrea Buglisi. The work presents sport as a means of inclusion. In this way, a modern artistic perspective complements the town’s older buildings and religious artworks.

Limone Seccagno and Festivals

Limone Seccagno di Pettineo is one of Sicily’s traditional agri-food products (PAT). It is cultivated with significantly less water than the average citrus crop in Sicily. Its local connection is also reflected in the annual Sagra del Limone Seccagno di Pettineo.

The festival calendar also includes religious traditions. At Easter, Pettineo holds “u scuontru,” the traditional meeting of the images of Mary and the risen Jesus Christ in the center of the square. Pettineo’s patron saint festival is celebrated in May with the traditional “vutata di l’Altari.” It includes an evening procession carrying the image of Sant’Oliva through the town’s streets. The Festa Madonna della Pietà includes a procession carrying the image of the Madonna through the main streets of Pettineo’s historic center.

An exceptional testament to the surrounding countryside is the monumental olive tree of Innari, which is more than 800 years old. Together with the Limone Seccagno, it broadens the view beyond the town’s architecture to Pettineo’s agriculturally shaped character.
