Discover Alia: Grotte della Gurfa, Museums and Church Art

Alia combines impressive rock architecture with museums, sacred art and historic routes. For planning your trip, the town is particularly interesting if you want to experience culture not just in a single building, but in a variety of forms. A fixed date in the annual calendar is the Festa Patronale “Santa Maria Delle Grazie”, which takes place in Alia every year on 2 July.

The Grotte della Gurfa and its rock architecture

The Grotte della Gurfa is located within the municipality of Alia. It is not a natural cave system, but a monument of rock architecture carved into reddish sandstone. The circular main chamber is approximately 12.50 metres wide and 16 metres high. Its bell-shaped profile is defined by a central opening.

The upper level of the Grotte della Gurfa can be reached via steps carved into the rock and comprises four interconnected rooms. There is also a Copper Age necropolis at the site. If you would like to visit the grotto, advance reservation through the Alia municipal tourism information office is required. Guided visits include a historical and cultural tour.

Museums spanning palaces, crafts and everyday life

MuCiA is housed in the Palazzo Arrigo fu Sant’Elia, one of the oldest historic palaces in Alia. MuCiA includes the permanent exhibition “Terra e Luce. Dalla Gurfa al Roden Crater”. It also includes the ethnographic collection “Oliveri – Il Ciclo del grano”.

The Raccolta Oliveri – Il ciclo del Grano comprises 169 artefacts relating to grain cultivation, breadmaking, winemaking and cheesemaking. The Museo del Territorio “Le opere e i giorni” offers a broader perspective on the material culture of Alia. Its focus is on tools for ironworking, grain processing, caring for livestock and traditional crafts.

The Museo Etno Antropologico Valle del Torto is housed in Casa Pittà in Alia across three floors. Its collections include historic tools for ironworking, grain processing, caring for livestock, traditional crafts and the production of dairy products. The Casa Museo del Fabbro is located in the former workshop of Antonino Ferrara, a master of wrought iron.

Sacred art and historic places

Palazzo Guccione is considered the first settlement nucleus of Alia. The Santuario Maria Santissima delle Grazie has eleven artistic stained-glass windows with Marian themes. They were created in 1965 by Guido Polloni from Florence. The church contains a statue by Rosario Bagnasco of the saint to whom it is dedicated. The same church also contains a statue of Saint Francis of Paola by Rosario Bagnasco, as well as the Addolorata by Benedetto Civiletti.

Alia as a reference point for historic routes

The archaeological and nature trail “Menhir Pizzo della Madonna – Tholos della Gurfa” connects the Menhir of Pizzo della Madonna in Valledolmo with the Tholos della Gurfa in Alia. In addition, Stage 14 of the Antica Trasversale Sicula runs from Màrcato Bianco to Vallelunga Pratameno via the Grotte della Gurfa in Alia and Valledolmo. This means you can consider Alia when planning your trip both as the destination of a cultural trail and as a stop on a longer route.
