Cefalù between the Cathedral, Rocca and Beaches

Cefalù features a distinctive limestone rock and a sequence of a cathedral, museum, ancient traces, fortifications and beaches. This creates a place where you can combine culture, views and routes based on specific destinations as you plan your visit.

Rocca and Historic Elevated Location

Located in the immediate vicinity of Cefalù, Rocca di Cefalù is considered a fortress and is a 270-metre-high limestone rock offering views over the city. The ascent follows an uphill path surrounded by greenery, which halfway up is bordered by high medieval battlement walls. The Tempio di Diana is located on the western slope of the Rocca. Its later construction phase is dated to the 2nd century BC. A cistern near the Tempio di Diana is dated to around the 9th century BC and, according to the interpretation, is associated with a pagan water cult.

Culture between the Cathedral and Urban Traces

The Cathedral of Cefalù is one of the monuments of the serial UNESCO World Heritage Site “Arab-Norman Palermo and the Cathedral Churches of Cefalú and Monreale”. In the immediate vicinity of Cefalù are the Museo Mandralisca, the Lavatorio Medievale Fiume Cefalino museum and the historic site of Porta Della Pescara. The Museo Mandralisca and the Lavatorio Medievale Fiume Cefalino are museums, while Rocca di Cefalù is a fortress and Porta Della Pescara is a historic site.

The Museo Mandralisca is an interdisciplinary museum with archaeological objects, an art gallery, a malacological collection, a coin cabinet, furniture and other valuable objects. Its central work is Antonello da Messina’s “Ritratto d’ignoto marinaio”.

The Lavatoio medioevale can be reached via a staircase known as Lumachella, which leads to a partially covered area with several wash basins. Water from the Cefalino River flows into the basins through 22 cast-iron spouts shaped like lion heads.

The Strada Romana in the Corte delle Stelle is a six-metre-long section of well-preserved paving from the Hellenistic-Roman period of Cefalù. The Bastione di Capo Marchiafava is a powerful defensive bulwark from the 17th century with an impressive viewpoint.

Beaches and Routes for Different Priorities

The beaches Spiaggia Cefalú and Plaja degli Uccelli are located in the immediate vicinity of Cefalù. The beaches Spiaggia di Cocuzzola and Salinelle are also located in the area around Cefalù. A rocky path along Cefalù’s fortifications can be walked in its entirety from the Presidiana marina. The rocky path along the fortifications differs from the uphill path to the Rocca: the former begins at the Presidiana marina, while halfway up the latter, medieval battlement walls border the ascent.
