Castronovo di Sicilia between Castle, Music and Landscape

The Chiesa Madre SS. Trinità stands on the grounds of the Norman castle of Castronovo di Sicilia. Two castle towers have been preserved: one was converted into a bell tower, while the other was integrated into the apse. This architectural ensemble thus combines a sacred site with visibly preserved elements of the medieval fortification.

Churches and Music History

The Chiesa di Santa Caterina d’Alessandria was established by a Viceroyal Decree dated 23 August 1523. Locally, it is known as Chiesa della Badia because a Benedictine convent stood there until the end of the 19th century. Its name and building history thus provide a second perspective on the historical character of the town.

At Palazzo Giandalia, architecture and music history come together at the same address: the historic building from the 13th century was originally built by the Alondres family and incorporates a visible Norman tower. The palazzo houses the Museo della musica “Mario Del Monaco”, which presents a permanent exhibition of objects, stage costumes, recordings, paintings and photographs dedicated to the tenor Mario Del Monaco.

Archaeological Traces and Fortress Landscape

In Contrada San Luca, urban and rural sections of a Roman villa were excavated. The villa was in use from the late 2nd century BC until the beginning of the 3rd century AD. Casale San Pietro includes a rectangular, single-nave church with an apse, first documented in 1094 in a donation by Count Roger to the Abbey of San Bartolomeo di Lipari.

Monte Kassar also expands the historical context: the site is a Byzantine fortress with a defensive wall approximately 3 metres wide and 2 kilometres long; the area covers 90 hectares.

Landscape and Easter Tradition

For walking and landscape interests, the Santa Caterina woodland and picnic area lies about 4 kilometres from Castronovo di Sicilia. It consists mainly of a coniferous forest artificially planted in the 1960s; the Magna Via Francigena crosses a large part of it.

La Cavalcata is an equestrian procession held during the Easter celebrations. Alongside churches, castles and archaeological sites, it adds a clearly Easter-related cultural occasion to travel planning.

Local Cuisine and Getting There

Local cuisine includes maccu and bread seasoned with olive oil, which are considered very old local dishes of Castronovo di Sicilia. Local cheeses include Tuma Persa, Fiore Sicano and traditional Sicilian pecorino. These dishes and cheeses complement the historical focus with a culinary dimension.

Castronovo di Sicilia can be reached via the Palermo–Agrigento expressway. At kilometre 11.800, after the turn-off for Lercara Friddi and near the railway station, the provincial road begins; after 3.5 kilometres of winding road, you reach the town centre.
