Ventimiglia di Sicilia: History, Nature and Local Culture

Archaeology and Architectural History

Ventimiglia di Sicilia combines historical traces, religious buildings and natural history themes with a landscape that can be explored along different routes. At the Museo Civico on Piazza Santa Rosalia, you can see an archaeological collection with ceramic fragments, vessels, coins, tools and other finds from the Ventimiglia di Sicilia area. The Museo della Montagna on Via Umberto I presents fossils, rocks, minerals and other natural history finds relating to the geological history of the area.

The Chiesa Madre was completed in 1628. Its complex includes the church, the bell tower, the clock and the choir. The church also houses a 16th-century panel altarpiece attributed to Antonello Crescenzo, “il Panormita”. In Ventimiglia di Sicilia, sacred architecture and art-historical details therefore stand directly alongside the archaeological and geological themes of the museums.

Another focal point is located in Contrada “Castellaccio” on the northern edge of the present-day town centre. There stands a considerably older settlement of historical and archaeological importance, which may be the ancient “CALAMIGNA”. Seals, coins, jewellery and other objects have been found at the site, documenting various historical periods. In 1627, the Contessa, who had meanwhile been elevated to the rank of Principessa by royal privilege, applied for and obtained permission to establish and populate a new settlement.

Nature Among Rocks and Trails

The landscape includes the “Riserva Naturale Pizzo Cane, Pizzo Trigna e Grotta Mazzamuto” nature reserve. It encompasses caves, rocks, valleys, streams, pastureland and forests. A special geological feature is Grotta Leone: its entrance resembles the profile of a lion, while stalactites and stalagmites can be found inside.

The protected landscape around Ventimiglia di Sicilia can be explored via hiking trails and old mule tracks. Within the nature reserve, a network of paths leads along organised nature and hiking routes supported by local associations and guides. The Museo della Montagna also organises educational activities for all schools on topics related to the mountains.

Festivals, Faith and Typical Products

Maria Santissima del Rosario is the patron saint of Ventimiglia di Sicilia and is celebrated there every year on the first Sunday in October. The Festa della Madonna del Rosario includes a traditional fair for agricultural equipment and a fair of typical products. Religious customs and the connection with agriculture thus shape part of the local festival calendar.

The Sagra del “Feudo di Calamigna” also combines performances with tastings of typical products. On 11 August 2024, the 9th edition of “I Sapori del Feudo di Calamigna” took place, featuring a historical procession, guided tours, a market and tastings of typical products. For planning your trip, these themes offer different ways to experience the town: you can focus on history and art, geology and the landscape, or religious festivals and regional products.

Getting There and Planning Your Trip

One listed route from Palermo to Ventimiglia di Sicilia follows the A19 motorway towards Catania, the Bagheria exit and then the SP 16 through Baucina to Ventimiglia di Sicilia. This connection adds to the picture of a place whose sights and landscape appeal to different day-trip plans. When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore set the focus of your trip between museums, historic sites, nature trails and festival culture, without the individual themes losing their own significance.
