Corleone: Culture, Nature and Sicilian Routes

Corleone combines culture, nature and local traditions. Museums, churches, historic buildings, a waterfall, a stage along unpaved paths, festivals and regional cheese tastings give the town a variety of facets. Museums, Churches and Historic Buildings

CIDMA preserves certified copies of the records of the Maxi Trial that are unique worldwide. The Ethnographic Museum of Corleone displays more than 2,000 objects related to local farming and craft traditions. Together, the two institutions represent two different approaches to Corleone's history: its political past and the rural and craft life of the area.

The Church of San Martino, also known as the Chiesa Madre of Corleone, is an 18th-century neoclassical building with three naves and side chapels. Inside is a marble sculpture of the Madonna del Soccorso from the Gagini school. The Church of the Carmine contains 18th-century frescoes.

The Rocche Gemelle comprise Rocca Soprana, with a Saracen castle dating from the 9th century, and Rocca Sottana. The latter is now a Franciscan hermitage restored by the Bourbons. Together, the two buildings add a medieval and religious perspective to the picture of Corleone.

Waterfall and Landscape around the Historic Centre

The Due Rocche waterfall lies behind the small Church of Madonna delle Rocche on the edge of Corleone's historic centre. At Due Rocche, the Corleone stream reaches the town through a gorge cut into limestone, ending in a picturesque waterfall. At its foot, the water collects in a blue-green pool. Access to the park with the waterfall is restricted when water levels are high; you should take this into account when planning your visit.

The Corleone–Prizzi Stage

The Corleone–Prizzi stage leads uphill from Corleone to Malopasso and then continues along unpaved paths beside the Via delle Fonti towards Masseria ‘Mbriaca. Its sights include the ruins of the Norman Church of Madonna della Scala in Corleone and the archaeological site of Cozzo Spolentino. The route thus combines landscape, traces of history and specific sections of the trail in a single stage.

Festivals, Masks and Local Specialties

On 1 March, Corleone celebrates the festival in honour of its patron saint, San Leoluca, with a procession and the lighting of bonfires. The Riavulicchi are the traditional carnival mask of Corleone. Together, these traditions give the town its own seasonal and cultural character.
