Villagrazia between Monastic History and Rural Landscape

Villagrazia combines a history dating back to a 15th-century monastery with the character of a rural settlement in the mountains. The area of the former monastery was initially known as Grazia Vecchia. Later, the name Grazia Nuova became established before Villagrazia ultimately became the current name. A farming village called della Grazia developed around the monastery and grew larger over time.

For orientation on site, Villagrazia’s division into two parts is helpful: the older part includes the rural town center, while the newer part extends between the bypass road and the older area. This is also where sections of open countryside can be found. Villagrazia can be reached from the Palermo bypass exit via State Road 624 Palermo–Sciacca. From the exit, winding rural panoramic roads continue via this state road to Villaciambra.

Villas, Gardens and Underground Architecture

One of the notable historical references is Villa Fernandez on Via Crimi. It was founded at the end of the 17th century by Marquis Giuseppe Fernandez and is characterized by extensive gardens. A sculpture of the Genio di Palermo stands at the garden’s entrance arch. Architecture, garden space and a distinctive symbol of Palermo thus stand side by side at this site.

A distinctive architectural form is the Camera dello Scirocco. The complex consists of an underground gallery and an underground hall through which a spring-water channel runs. Gerardo Alliata commissioned it in 1552. The Camera dello Scirocco of Villa Naselli Agliata is located in the former rural borgata of Villagrazia di Palermo between the Oreto River and Monte Orecchiuta. For understanding the area’s history, not only the visible landscape is relevant, but also the underground architecture.

Churches and Religious History

The Chiesa di Maria Santissima delle Grazie at Via Villagrazia 302 in Palermo is protected as an architectural monument as a religious building. The Chiesa e Convento di Maria SS. delle Grazie is designated in Villagrazia as a place of interest for pilgrims and tourists. The Agro di Villagrazia is also among the area’s places of interest for pilgrims and tourists. The Monastero della Visitazione is also part of the local history: the community moved into the new building in Villagrazia di Palermo on December 29, 1964. A white statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus stands in the spacious entrance square. In the Marian pilgrimage route of the First Vicariate, the Chiesa Parrocchiale Maria SS. Delle Grazie is listed at the address Via Villagrazia 302 in Palermo (Villagrazia).
