The Sentiero Geologico Urbano Isnello offers a connection between local history and the landscape. The trail leads through the historic centre and onwards to the Gola d’Isnello. It was created to make the Gola d’Isnello accessible as a geosite. It is a significant example of a geological formation created by river incision. The trail therefore connects historic areas of the town with a geological destination that is also suitable for a mindful, observant hike.

Churches, Art and Historical Traces

Castello di Isnello is a probably high-medieval defensive citadel with a double ring of walls. Its origins are probably associated with Byzantine or Arab contexts; the complex was refounded in the first half of the 12th century. The churches, too, span different periods: Chiesa Madre di Isnello dates from the 15th century. Chiesa di San Michele was probably built between 1300 and 1400 and has a finely painted wooden coffered ceiling from the 17th century.

Chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore dates from the late 14th century. Inside is a marble sculpture of the Virgin Mary created in 1547 by an artist from the Sicilian school. Chiesa dell’Annunziata has medieval origins and was renovated at the beginning of the 18th century. Its works of art include a marble statue of the Annunciation and the Archangel Gabriel from the Gagini school, an organ from 1765 and a painting of the Nativity attributed to Zoppo di Gangi.

Chiesa del Rosario formerly belonged to Dominican monks and was added to the palace of the Princes of Isnello towards the end of the 16th century. It houses a 16th-century painting by the Flemish artist Simone de Wobreck as well as a magnificent liturgical vestment embroidered with gold, silk and coral. In Isnello, architecture, religious art and historic craft techniques thus emerge as independent reasons to visit.

Textile Traditions and Local Orientation

At the Museo Trame di Filo in Isnello, the exhibition presents traditional prototypes and original creations connected with the tradition of sacred weaving and textile furnishings for the home. The old techniques of Filet or Modano and Sfilato, dating from the 15th century, are still used there today. Isnello’s tourist information office is also located in the Museo Trame di Filo. Textile culture and practical local orientation therefore come together in one specific place.

Festivals with a Distinctive Local Character

The festival traditions also give the course of the year in Isnello recognisable themes. The Good Friday procession in Isnello is associated with the repeated performance of the final three scenes of the sacred Casazza presentation. La Luminaria is a large fire lit in Isnello’s main square on 24 December.

At the Sagra della Frittella on 29 April, artichokes, fresh broad beans, peas and wild fennel are cooked in large containers. The Sagra delle Fave di San Pietro takes place on 29 June.
