Roccapalumba between Forest, Hills and Astronomy

Roccapalumba lies at the foot of the dolomitic La Rocca massif, in the upper valley of the Torto River and amid gently rolling hills. At the same time, the town is surrounded by forest. A Destination for Astronomical Interests

The Centro Studi Astronomico in Roccapalumba has a 50-centimetre Newton-Cassegrain main telescope with a two-metre focal length, a 15-centimetre refracting telescope and a three-metre helioplanetograph. The planetarium projects thousands of stars and planets visible to the naked eye onto a hemispherical dome. The Pizzo Suaro Observatory has areas open to the public for educational exhibitions, astronomical photography exhibitions, conferences and teaching events. Water, Crafts and Archaeological Traces

The water-powered Mulino idraulico Fiaccati was built in 1882 by Emanuele Avellone in Contrada Fiaccati near Roccapalumba-Alia railway station. Water channelled from a nearby stream powers one of its two waterwheels; there is no admission fee to access the mill. Christian necropolises dating from the 4th and 5th centuries were found on the rocky hill of Castellacelo above the Torto River. The Le Rocche archaeological zone attests to human settlement from the Neolithic period to the Middle Ages, with no demonstrable interruption.

A wall approximately two metres high and the springing of an arch remain from the Ecclesia. The masonry technique, together with pottery and roof tiles found on the surface, suggests a Late Antique Roman or Byzantine basilica. Casale Rocche has a broad, round-arched portal made of stone blocks, leading into an antechamber connected to the courtyard. The public washhouse in Contrada Pizzuta bears witness to one stage of traditional wool processing and consists of two adjacent masonry basins.

Churches, Festivals and Local Products

The Chiesa Madre is dedicated to the Apostles Peter and Paul and was opened for worship in December 1641. Above its high altar is an altarpiece created by Ilderigo Panepinto in 1844, depicting the patron saints at the Council of Jerusalem. The Church of Maria SS della Luce has been documented since a 1682 “Rivelo” of the people of Roccapalumba. The Santuario della Madonna della Luce is a pilgrimage destination, especially on its feast day on 23 August.

Settimana Santa includes processions and public events. The 26th edition of the Opuntia-Ficus-Indica Festival celebrates the prickly pear, includes tastings of prickly pears in various menus as well as a tasting of Scuzzulata, a prickly pear liqueur, and takes place in Roccapalumba from 16 to 18 October 2026. Agricultural and livestock farms, producers of typical products and local craftspeople take part.

Getting There and Planning Your Trip

From Palermo, travel by road along the A19 Palermo–Catania motorway to the Termini Imerese exit, then take the turn-off near Caccamo and continue on the SS 285 towards Roccapalumba.
