Sommariva: Villa Africa, Pizzo Muletta and Grotta Lunga

Sommariva appeals to a range of travel interests with its landscape, Villa Africa and natural attractions. The Sommariva village lies at the foot of the long Pizzo Muletta hill. The Torrente Ciachea runs through the short plains of the Sommariva and Ciachea districts before reaching the sea. The Casa museo Villa Africa is located in the Sommariva village in Capaci. Traditional African art is displayed there, including statues, masks and everyday objects. Villa Africa also houses an extensive collection of masks, fetishes, weapons, paintings, statuettes, as well as string and percussion instruments. It also includes finely crafted ivory works, Arab and Abyssinian weapons, naive paintings and rare bronzes from Benin.

The writer Emanuele Cavallaro assembled the Villa Africa collection over the course of 50 years during his numerous journeys across the African continent. As a result, Sommariva is home not just to a single art object, but to a diverse collection that brings together different forms of African artistic expression. For visitors interested in culture, Villa Africa is therefore a distinct focal point alongside the natural attractions around Capaci.

Grotta Lunga and special nature observations

Grotta Lunga is a cave opening in Aptian–Cenomanian limestone. These rocks form the lower part of Pizzo Muletta near the village of Capaci. In the western wall of the cave, about 10 metres from the entrance, there is still a dinosaur bone discovered in 2005. The find is therefore one of the unusual details that complement the geological character of the surroundings, without implying anything about current accessibility or visiting opportunities.

The Riserva Naturale Isola delle Femmine nature reserve lies nearby. It is home to resident animal species; during bird migration, additional bird species arrive. The reserve is also home to five reptile species and an endemic land snail. Those wishing to combine a trip with nature observation can consider this habitat, alongside the paths near Grotta Lunga, as a separate thematic focus.

Villa Africa can be reached via the SS 113: After leaving the centre of Capaci in the direction of Carini, continue to the first roundabout. Turn left there and follow the SP 3 towards Torretta until you reach Villa Africa.
