Alcamo combines a dense historic centre with the wooded Monte Bonifato and the nearby coastal area of Alcamo Marina. If you would like to combine culture, nature, wine country and beach in one trip, you will find very different experiences here: the town is home to churches, museums, libraries and theatres, while Bosco d’Alcamo and the Gulf of Castellammare offer different perspectives. When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore weigh up the focus between town, landscape and coast.

Art and religious buildings in the historic centre

The Museo di Arte Sacra is located in the historic centre of Alcamo. The Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta was built around 1332. Its decoration includes 38 ceiling frescoes by Guglielmo Borremans, executed between 1735 and 1737. The Chiesa dei Santi Paolo e Bartolomeo houses a painting of the patron saints, created by Giuseppe Felice from Trapani in 1701. With its elaborate stucco work and magnificent frescoes, the church is considered the highest expression of Alcamo’s Baroque style.

The Santuario di Maria SS. dei Miracoli was built in 1547 and remodelled at the beginning of the 18th century. In May, it is a pilgrimage destination on the occasion of the festival in honour of Maria Santissima. The statue of the Madonna dei Miracoli, created by Lorenzo Curti in 1721, is carried every year on 21 June in the procession for Alcamo’s patronal festival. The Chiesa di San Francesco d’Assisi is a 17th-century church.

Museums, books and stages

The Museo MACA is housed in the monumental complex of the Collegio dei Gesuiti. The Museo degli Strumenti Musicali Multietnici Fausto Cannone is located in the historic centre in the former church of San Giacomo De Spada. Its collection comprises 232 musical instruments. Visitors should call 0924 24592 before their visit to check whether the museum is open.

The Biblioteca Sebastiano Bagolino preserves a significant collection of old books as well as handwritten and printed works. The Biblioteca Civica Sebastiano Bagolino organises guided tours for pupils from local schools, covering its history, important holdings, organisation, operation and services offered.

The Teatro Cielo D’Alcamo was originally called Teatro Comunale Ferrigno and was built in the mid-19th century. The Anfiteatro Orto di Ballo is located in a former quarry and is intended for events and open-air performances, as well as scientific, educational and museum activities related to the geosite.

Monte Bonifato, nature and wine country

The Bosco d’Alcamo nature reserve protects a densely wooded area on Monte Bonifato. Due to its location and altitude, it is an important resting place for migratory birds. The nature reserve also includes the north-western tower of the Castello di Ventimiglia. Its origins date back to the Arab period; in 1397, it was restored and reinforced by the Ventimiglia family.

From the terrace of Piazza Sebastiano Bagolino, you can look out over the Gulf of Castellammare and the surrounding area of Alcamo. Vineyards shape the landscape there, where Alcamo DOC wine is produced. The Enoteca Regionale della Sicilia Occidentale is based in the Castello dei Conti di Modica.

Alcamo Marina: beach, sport and history

Nearby Alcamo Marina lies on the Gulf of Castellammare and has an approximately 3-kilometre-long beach. Various water sports can be practised there. Sea lilies grow on sandy dunes along the coast, so in addition to swimming and sporting activities, the characteristic dune vegetation is also part of the landscape.

In Contrada Forgia, there are remains of an ancient kiln dating from between the 1st and 4th centuries AD. You can learn more about the coastal area at Alcamo Marina.
