Caldonazzo by the Lake: Lake, History and Local Culture
Accommodation in Caldonazzo
Caldonazzo combines a vast landscape by the water with historic churches, traces of castles and regional culture. The municipality extends across a plain between Lake Caldonazzo, orchards and the bubbling Centa stream.
Lake, Plain and Waterscape
Lake Caldonazzo is the largest lake located entirely within Trentino. Swimming is possible in it from May to September; its beaches have been awarded the Blue Flag. This timing is particularly relevant when planning a stay if you consider the lake a focal point of your trip. The Parco del lago is a fenced green area with toilets and electricity, an amphitheatre with a lawn, a covered stage and a calisthenics area.
LakeART adds another perspective. The project combines the natural beauty of Valsugana with contemporary art and follows a cycling and walking route past the lakes of Lake Caldonazzo and Lake Levico. Guided tours and QR codes provide a deeper understanding of the artistic and natural-history aspects of the experience. This allows the landscape to be discovered not only as a lakeshore and network of paths, but also through art and the sharing of knowledge.
Churches and Historical Traces
The Chiesa di San Sisto was first mentioned in 1345 and rebuilt in the 18th century. Inside are two large fragments of a Christian tombstone from the 6th century. The church also houses the only surviving organ in Trentino made by the Serassi organ-building family from Bergamo.
The Chiesa di San Valentino stands on Colle di Brenta and was probably built before 1259. The Roman military road Via Claudia Augusta once ran along the ridge of the hill in front of the church. The Torre dei Sicconi also points to the town's medieval history: when the Castello di Caldonazzo was destroyed by the army of the Scaligeri in 1385, the so-called Torre dei Sicconi remained standing. A botanical garden was created around the remains that are still visible, and it can be reached from Caldonazzo via a pleasant walk.
Castle, Events and Regional Specialty
The Magnifica Corte di Caldonazzo is a castle; locally, it is also known as Castel Trapp or Castello di Caldonazzo. The Magnifica Corte Trapp hosts events, including the Mercatino dei Rigattieri Tirolesi in spring and the Rassegna di Canti Spirituals in summer. A culinary connection to the region is Mais Spin di Caldonazzo, an old local variety of maize from Trentino. Together with the lake, churches and historic sites, Caldonazzo thus presents itself as a place where nature, culture and regional characteristics exist closely alongside one another.
