Darzo’s Mining Heritage

In Darzo’s mining village, guided tours are offered of a gallery, the workshops, a sawmill building and the miners’ house. These stops reveal different aspects of the work and give the mining heritage tangible places. The development of the barite mines shaped the transformation from an agricultural to an industrial society in Darzo and other villages in the Chiese Valley. The first mines opened in 1894; in 2009, the tunnels of the last mine were permanently closed.

The Darzo mining site is located in the hamlet of Marìgole, in the wooded mountains immediately above the village, at an altitude of 1,100 metres.

Churches and Traces of Art History

The Church of San Giovanni Nepomuceno stands in the centre of Darzo. It was built between 1754 and 1777. The foundation stone was laid on 16 May 1754 and blessed by the dean of Condino, Don Antonio Pellizzari. On the façade, two rows of four pilasters each articulate the building: the lower row has Ionic pilasters, while the upper row has Tuscan pilasters. San Giovanni Nepomuceno makes it possible to trace the dating, construction history and façade design in a single building.

The former Church of San Michele is also part of Darzo’s historical heritage. It contained an extensive fresco cycle created in the 1480s by the workshop of the Baschenis from Averara. Fragments of painted plaster from San Michele were found during archaeological excavations in 2008 beneath the floor of the present-day church. The fragments are kept in the Soprintendenza’s storage facilities. The former place of worship and the surviving fragments therefore represent a history revealed through medieval painting, later use and archaeological finds.

A Walking Tour and Routes into the Landscape

The murals in Darzo form an ideal walking tour called “La strada delle miniere”. Along this route, the paintings depict Darzo’s miners as well as the processing, extraction, sorting and transport of the mineral. The scenes make the transformation of the village visible even where individual historical work processes are no longer part of everyday life.

The Via Vècia is an old mule track leading to the alpine pastures and grazing areas of Darzo. Its route can be followed on foot or by bicycle.

Another nature experience is offered by the wetland near Darzo. It has a small pond with an observation tower, from which waterfowl can be watched unobtrusively.

Local Flavours

Typical local products of Trentino include Marroni di Darzo. The chestnuts add a culinary dimension to the history of the village and reflect Darzo’s local character.
