Pian: Historic Hay Barns and the Stations of the Cross in Campitello
Accommodation in Pian
Pian among hay barns and mountain paths
Pian is a hamlet of Campitello di Fassa and preserves the character of a typical Alpine settlement. Masonry houses stand alongside wooden hay barns connected to the stable. Some houses also preserve traditional bread ovens located outside the enclosing walls.
The Stations of the Cross between Campitello and Pian lead from the church of Campitello to the church of Pian. The latter is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Stations of the Cross date back to the 18th century. The chapels of the Stations of the Cross associated with Pian were built in 1760 and restored in 1978; they bear distinctive meditative sayings in Ladin.
Churches, chapels and Ladin inscriptions
The houses themselves also contribute to the distinctive appearance of the village. The picturesque houses in Pian feature murals with traditional and religious motifs, as well as flowers and gnomes. Those interested in regional architectural heritage will find religious imagery and folk-inspired design brought together directly on the façades.
The course of the Campitello–Val Duron route
The Campitello–Val Duron route follows the paved Strèda de Col and Strèda de Pian to the village of Pian. It then crosses the picturesque village and continues along an unpaved path that runs from Fossèl towards Val Duron. The route also includes the village of Fraines and then a pronounced ascent to Rifugio Micheluzzi mountain hut. For route planning, the change in surface is important: at Pian, paved roads are followed by an unpaved path from Fossèl and then Fraines; afterwards, the route continues via a pronounced ascent to Rifugio Micheluzzi mountain hut.
Rocks and geological traces
Around Pian, the rocks bear witness to explosion breccias dating from the beginnings of ancient volcanic activity in Val di Fassa. At Pian, older geological formations overlap with younger ones. Alongside the historic houses and religious stations, the geological substratum is therefore also part of the village’s character. If, during your stay, you would like to pay attention not only to the settlement structure but also to the landscape of Val di Fassa, Pian offers several different perspectives.
Pian as a peaceful cultural and landscape focal point
Traditional Alpine architecture, religious cultural history, Ladin inscriptions and geological features come together in Pian within a compact thematic area. The historic hay barns point to the connection between house and stable, the murals give the façades their own motifs, and the Stations of the Cross connect Campitello with Pian. Together with the route towards Val Duron, this creates a place that you can get to know according to your interests in architectural heritage, history, language, route planning or geology.
