San Michele all'Adige combines historic cultural sites with wine and riverside experiences. The METS – Museo etnografico trentino San Michele was founded in 1968 in the former Augustinian monastery of San Michele all'Adige. The Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo complements this cultural focus with a long architectural history and distinctive details. At the same time, paths along the Adige, through the vineyards and into the forest lead to a quieter side of the town.

Culture and history in San Michele all'Adige

The Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo was consecrated on 29 September 1145. The church's present building was reconstructed under Provost Antonio Quetta between 1663 and 1687 and completed in 1683. The church contains five marble altars. On request, the Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo offers guided tours for groups.

The METS is also an important point of reference for a culture-focused stay. Its entrance is step-free and clearly signposted. This allows you to combine a museum visit with the church and the town's other historical themes, without reducing San Michele all'Adige to a single sightseeing theme.

Festivals, music and living traditions

San Michele all'Adige also shows its cultural side at events. In 2026, the Festival dei burattini in musica returned to San Michele all'Adige as part of Le Notti di San Michele for its 16th edition. Also in 2026, DISCANTO returned to the METS – Museo etnografico trentino San Michele in San Michele all'Adige for its fourth edition, focusing on traditional folk music and traditional songs.

The Festival dell'etnografia del Trentino is a spring festival held in the monumental complex of San Michele all'Adige. The programme includes discussion sessions with experts on traditional cultivated plants. The Gran carnevale alpino di San Michele all'Adige combines allegorical floats with masked groups from remote Alpine valleys. Ades en festa includes workshops on the riverbank and a raft trip. The event programme thus ranges from folk culture and music to communal experiences on the water.

Wine, grape varieties and the Cantina Experience

Winegrowing is a visible part of San Michele all'Adige's character. International and local grape varieties are grown in San Michele all'Adige and used to produce wines, especially sparkling wines. The METS cellar contains rooms dedicated to wine and grappa. Those interested in the region's culinary culture will find a direct introduction here to the products and how they are made.

The “Cantina Experience” includes a tour of the wine cellar and barrel cellar, with an explanation of the winemaking process and production using the Metodo-classico method. The accompanying tasting includes Trento DOC Riserva as well as Chardonnay, Sauvignon and Pinot Nero. Wine enthusiasts can therefore focus their visit both on the grape varieties and on the craft processes behind the wines.

Exploring on foot or by bicycle

For walks, you can follow the banks of the Adige and pass through the vineyards in San Michele all'Adige. The Sentiero nel bosco is a path in San Michele all'Adige that connects nature, history and culture. These two options appeal to different interests: while the riverbanks and vineyards offer open landscape views, the forest path combines a nature experience with the town's cultural themes.

There are also specific points of access for getting around by bicycle. The Valle dell'Adige Nord cycle path enters San Michele all'Adige at Grumo via a combined pedestrian and cycle bridge. The Trentino e.motion bike-sharing system has stations at the town hall of San Michele all'Adige and at Fondazione Mach. This allows culture, winegrowing, riverbanks and paths to be considered as different focal points when planning your trip.
