Sagron: Themed Trails, Churches and Mining History
Accommodation in Sagron
Sagron between the Plateau and Protected Areas
Sagron is located on a plateau at the confluence of the Torrente Mis and the Torrente Pezzea. Sagron Mis lies between Paneveggio-Pale di San Martino Nature Park and the Belluno Dolomites National Park. A trip to Sagron therefore combines landscapes, local history and trails that integrate historical traces directly into the surrounding area. From Primiero, Sagron and Mis can be reached via Passo Cereda in less than half an hour.
Churches and Living Local History
Several religious buildings tell of different chapters of the past. The Church of Madonna di Loreto in Sagron was completed in 1630. In Marcoi, Sagron, the Church of Madonna di Loreto was destroyed by fire in July 1793; as early as 1795, a new church with the same dedication had been completed in Salvadori, Sagron. The Chapel of Madonna di Caravaggio, rebuilt in 1812, also stands near Marcoi. Local tradition also includes the Sagra dei Marcoi, which takes place every year around 26 May.
The former occupations of the population are also part of this historical picture: for a long time, chair makers, charcoal burners, miners and lumberjacks lived in Sagron Mis. Those interested in regional history will therefore find not only individual buildings here, but also evidence of work, craftsmanship and the use of the landscape.
Themed Trails, Viewpoint and Mining Traces
The Intrecci del tempo themed trail begins at Chalet Giasenei and leads through beech and fir forests, partly along old paths and easy forest roads. Local history is presented through 16 information totems and 3 interpretive harps. The Torre T3 is also located near Chalet Giasenei, a viewpoint with a climbing wall and a telescope for observing the night sky.
The Sentiero Mineralogico follows the traces of mercury and gold mining. The entrances to the old mercury mines south of the route can be reached via an easy pack-animal path. Near the settlement of Vori, at an altitude of 883 m, a short detour leads to the opening of an old gold mine. The Casina or Scudelina, at an altitude of 855 m, was the old mining base of the Austrian mines of Sagron-Mis.
Routes of Varying Difficulty
As a longer outing, the first stage of the Croda Granda–Agner Wild Trek connects Sagron Mis via the Sentiero delle Regade with Malga Cavallera; the route is part of the Alta Via delle Dolomiti No. 2. Alongside shorter historical explorations, this also places larger trail networks at the centre of the experience. When choosing a hotel in Sagron, you can tailor your stay to your own interests: churches and local history, traces of mining, or the trails in the surrounding area.
Planned Projects at Terrabugio and Sagron
Modernisation and safety measures were planned for the route from the Terrabugio mercury mine on the Torrente Pezzea to the lower districts of Sagron in Località Scudelina. At the Terrabugio mine, the cleaning and consolidation of the ruins of the smelting furnaces, as well as the creation of a rest and information area, were also planned. The projects in Sagron include the construction of a bike park at the sports field.
