San Pellegrino: Cross-country skiing, ski slopes and alpine trails
Accommodation in San Pellegrino
San Pellegrino stands for winter sports, alpine landscapes and historical connections. The focus is on the Centro Fondo Alochet cross-country skiing centre at Passo San Pellegrino, the La VolatA ski slope and trails through an environment shaped by peaks, pastures and historic buildings. This makes it a destination that appeals both to those seeking active days and to those interested in regional history.
Cross-country skiing at different elevations
The Centro Fondo Alochet at Passo San Pellegrino offers 18 km of cross-country ski trails in four circuits of varying difficulty. They are located at elevations between 1,900 and 2,500 metres. The Centro Fondo Alochet can be reached by ski bus from Moena and from the centre of Passo San Pellegrino. Its length, elevation and different circuits give cross-country skiing in San Pellegrino a clear winter focus.
Ski slope and alpine trails
Winter sports also include La VolatA, a black ski run in the San Pellegrino ski area. It starts at Col Margherita at 2,510 metres, ends at Passo San Pellegrino at 1,874 metres and is approximately 2,350 metres long; the difference in elevation is 636 metres. A different connection with the landscape is offered by the trail from the mountain station of the Costabella chairlift, across alpine pastures, to the historic Rifugio Passo delle Selle hut (Bergvagabunden Hut).
Peaks and the Fuciade basin
Four peaks are located in the immediate surroundings of San Pellegrino: Cima di Costabella, Lastei Grande, Punta dell'Uomo and Lastei Piccolo. Together, they mark the mountain landscape that gives the pass its distinctive spatial character.
A gravel road leads through open stands of mountain pine and larch, as well as across meadows and pastures, to the Fuciade basin. There, huts and old hay barns shape the landscape. In winter, the gravel-road section on the route from Passo San Pellegrino to the Fuciade basin can be travelled by horse-drawn carriage. Fuciade thus represents a stretch of landscape where the route, vegetation and traditional buildings come together.
A pass with a history
Historically, the pass’s significance dates back to the Middle Ages: since that time, Passo San Pellegrino has served as a route connecting the north with the port of Venice. Merchants, pilgrims and soldiers used this connection. The former hospice at Passo San Pellegrino remains a meeting place for cultural exhibitions.
Culture in the surrounding region
The wider region around San Pellegrino is home to Latemar Art, a museum; Castel Salego, a castle; Castelveccio, a ruin; and Chiesa parrocchiale, a church. These different places expand the themes of landscape and winter sports to include a museum, castle, ruin and church. This combination can help you choose accommodation if you would like to combine winter sports, alpine trails and culture in one trip.
