Tuenno combines the history of an ancient settlement with the landscapes of Val di Tovel. This gives you a variety of themes to explore when planning your trip: you can discover sacred art and local history, explore paths through forests and scree, or experience the unique natural surroundings of Lago di Tovel. Tuenno originated as a prehistoric settlement, providing a historical background that reaches back to the town’s early development.

Between Local History and Sacred Art

The church of Sant’Orsola is located in the town. It was restored and extended several times. The most important extension took place in 1914, when a new building was added to the old core. The new church was consecrated on 9 May 1925 by Bishop Celestino Endrici during a pastoral visit. Sant’Orsola is said to have been mentioned for the first time in an inventory from 1422 that is no longer preserved today.

The Chapel of S. Emerenziana also takes visitors back to an earlier era. It dates from the 15th century and is known for its wooden altars and decorative triptych. Anyone who wants to experience not only nature in Tuenno but also take the region’s architectural and artistic history into account will find a specific reason here to include the town centre and its sacred buildings in their itinerary.

Lago di Tovel and Its Special Features

In the surrounding area, the Casa del Parco Lago Rosso is located on the shores of Lago di Tovel. The visitor centre explores the history of the lake’s red colouration up to 1964. Exhibitions there present the algae responsible for the red colouration, the disappearance of this phenomenon, and the wildlife of Val di Tovel. The lake was formerly also known as the “Red Lake” because an alga turned its waters an intense red between July and September.

The paths around Tuenno differ considerably in character. Hiking routes lead from the immediate surroundings of Tuenno towards Lago di Tovel in Adamello Brenta Nature Park. The Giro del Lago di Tovel circular trail is mostly level; a short section runs over rocky steps and is made easier by a metal cable. Another route is the Sentiero delle Glare: it initially passes through a spruce and pine forest, then crosses the scree area of delle Glare, which was created by a major landslide, and ends beside a quietly flowing stream running downhill through the valley.

Routes for Different Day Plans

The road to Lago di Tovel starts on the southwest side of Tuenno and climbs for 11 kilometres through Val di Tovel. From Malga Tuena, the route follows SAT Trail 309 downhill to the shores of Lago di Tovel, with a walking time of one hour; access is from Tuenno.

When all car parks in Val di Tovel are full, vehicles are redirected to the Ex Cofco car park in the town centre of Tuenno and a shuttle service is activated. For cyclists, the easy “Country” route of the Dolomiti di Brenta Bike leads from Tuenno towards Cles.

Apple Culture in the Town

Agritur Leita in Tuenno offers another aspect of a stay. It features an agricultural and gastronomic tour through the farm’s orchards, focusing on the cultivation of Melinda apples.
