Mountain trails between alpine pastures, ridges and history

Breguzzo reveals its alpine side particularly in the Val di Breguzzo. The “Senter de le Fede” hiking trail, marked 223B, leads from Ponte Pianone to Malga Acquaforte and follows an old shepherd’s path along which sheep were driven to the high pastures. Another way to access the landscape is the Arnò branch of the “Passi nella storia” trail. It follows information boards to Malga d’Arnò; the loop takes about four hours and has an elevation gain of 450 m.

The “Passi nella storia” branch in the Val di Trivena also combines physical activity with regional history. It begins directly behind the Breg Adventure Park and leads, accompanied by information boards and signs to Rifugio Trivena, to a former marble quarry. The “Orizzonti Liberi” trail at the head of the Val di Breguzzo offers high-alpine impressions. It runs almost continuously along the ridge between Passo del Frate at 2249 m and Bocchetta del Cop di Casa at 2776 m, also known as Porte di Trivena. Along the way, it connects alpine habitats with impressive traces of the First World War.

Val di Breguzzo: water, wetlands and alpine heights

The Val di Breguzzo is traversed across its entire width by the Torrente Arnò. To the northwest, it is bordered by mountains reaching heights of up to 3000 m. In summer, easy hiking trails lead to the surrounding alpine pastures; experienced hikers can reach the highest glacial peaks of the Adamello Group. In winter, the valley is used for ski touring, while Rifugio Trivena serves as a well-equipped base.

The Pian Redont peat bog offers a precise insight into the natural environment. It is a priority habitat of type 7140 under the Natura 2000 Habitats Directive 92/43/EEC. Scheuchzeria (S. palustris L.) and the carnivorous round-leaved sundew (Drosera rotundifolia L.) grow there. The landscape around Breguzzo also includes Malga Acquaforte at 1371 m. In its surroundings there is a mineral spring with thermal water, reached via the route through the Val di Breguzzo.

Sacred history and cultural heritage

The Antica Chiesa di Sant’Andrea in Breguzzo dates back to its first documentary mention in the 13th century. It was remodelled in 1350 and underwent a final significant intervention in 1531, which shaped its present form. The Chiesa di Sant’Andrea Apostolo has an 18th-century oil painting on canvas as its main altarpiece. The work comes from the Venetian school and is attributed to Palma il Giovane. The Chiesa di Sant’Andrea Apostolo was consecrated on 7 September 1867.

The Vecchia Chiesa di Sant’Andrea is dedicated to the town’s patron saint and is located on the state road near the cemetery. Its history can be traced back to 1242. Another historically significant site is Casa Ciolli-Sembenotti. The building is protected as a cultural asset of particular importance and is considered a significant site in the history of Trentino in the 19th century.

The communal character of Breguzzo includes the Festa di Sant’Antonio and the Sagra di San Luigi. Both are regarded as traditional events dedicated to the community.

Practical guidance for your trip

If you plan to visit the Breg Adventure Park, advance reservation is mandatory; admission tickets can be purchased online. The park includes adventure courses, zip lines, walkways and Tibetan bridges connecting the trees. For a gentler route, “La Via delle Valli” is considered accessible to everyone, including families with strollers. The route runs along a paved mountain road between forests and meadows. This makes it possible to compare intensive mountain excursions, family-oriented trails, nature observation and culture in Breguzzo.
