Hilly Landscape and Rural Village Center

Banzena is an agriculturally characterized settlement in a hilly landscape and is also classified as a rural village center of historical and environmental value. The southern side of Banzena is bordered by the terraces of the Corsalone stream. Banzena can be reached via the municipal road of the same name along the mid-slope.

Poggio Fognano, a mountain, lies in the immediate vicinity of Banzena. Monte Penna, Poggio Ginestrino, and Poggio Magiovanna, all mountains, are also located around Banzena. Thus, the landscape description extends from the agriculturally characterized village center and the stream terraces to several mountains in the surrounding area.

Historic Village Center and Church

The historic village center of Banzena developed as a stronghold around the castle. The old Via Romea dell’Alpe di Serra ran through the historic village center. The Church of Banzena stands along the road; it appears to have been completely rebuilt in the 18th century. A church in Banzena is listed in a papal letter from Adrian IV dated May 2, 1155, among the 18 old subsidiary churches of the Pieve di Bibbiena. The town center also contains an almost completely destroyed ring wall and a watchtower.

Castles and Monasteries in the Surrounding Area

The surrounding area of Banzena is home to Castello dei Conti Guidi, a castle; Santuario de La Verna, a monastery; Romena Castle, a castle; and Monastero di Camaldoli, a monastery. Castello dei Conti Guidi and Romena Castle therefore represent castles in the surrounding area, while Santuario de La Verna and Monastero di Camaldoli are classified as monasteries.

Via Romea Germanica through Banzena

On the stage from Corezzo to Chitignano, the Via Romea Germanica passes through Banzena and then continues to Caselle and Campi. The section begins in Corezzo, passes through Banzena, and continues via Caselle and Campi to Chitignano.
