Historic Soci between the Castle Core and the Village District

Soci originated as a medieval, walled castle; the first written records date from 1002. This gives you a place whose character brings together its medieval origins and later architectural evidence.

In Soci’s original district, there are narrow lanes lined with old houses, a tower and a medieval fountain. These elements give the historic centre a clearly recognisable structure, making it particularly suitable for exploring the area’s cultural history.

Villa La Mausolea is a remarkable example of 17th-century architecture. The walled complex has a three-arched loggia with a stone clock. Those interested in architecture will find a tangible example here from a later period in the village’s history.

Archaeology and Rural Cultural Heritage

Archaeological excavations at the former church of San Nicola in Soci uncovered the remains of the original church, along with numerous burials and furnishings. The former church is therefore part of the site’s historical record, not a statement about its current use.

The Raccolta Rurale Casa Rossi displays material evidence of the agro-silvo-pastoral culture of the Archiano Valley. The Casa Rossi collection comprises almost 2,000 objects and documents, mainly relating to the agricultural practices of mezzadria, the Italian sharecropping system.

The trail allows walks along the embankments and provides insights into the agricultural drainage and land-reclamation work carried out in the Archiano Valley.

Poggio Ginestrino, a mountain, lies in the immediate vicinity of Soci. Poggio Fognano, Poggio dei Tre Confini and Prato alla Penna are also located in the area around Soci; all three are mountains. These mountains complement the historic village setting with a distinctly scenic perspective.

Arcanum Fest in July

Arcanum Fest – La Festa del Mistero takes place in Soci in July. During the festival, Soci’s historic centre is transformed into a medieval-themed setting with staged entertainment and theatre workshops.

During Arcanum Fest, visitors can sample typical medieval dishes and local products from the gastronomic tradition. In this way, the event combines historical representation with regional food culture and makes Soci interesting for travellers who enjoy linking cultural themes with culinary experiences.
