Castel San Niccolò – Castle, Stone Trails and Casentino

Castel San Niccolò combines a historic center with a strong stoneworking tradition, ecclesiastical art and landscapes on Pratomagno. The surviving remains of the Castello di Castel San Niccolò are located at the highest point of the historic center and dominate the surrounding valley. Castles, Churches and Art in Casentino

The Castello dei Conti Guidi includes the Cappella del Crocifisso, with a 14th-century Crucifixion fresco from the Florentine school. The castle was the residence of the Guidi family until 1349. The Chiesa dei Santi Pietro e Donato was built in the 12th century, has a Romanesque character and is connected with the history of the Conti Guidi. The Pieve di San Martino a Vado preserves its original façade; it was built in the 11th century by the Conti Guidi at the ancient crossing over the Solano River.

Further sacred art can be found in the Chiesa di Santa Maria a Spalanni: the high altar features Francesco Matis’s Madonna del Rosario e Santi from 1605, and the church also houses his Maddalena Penitente. The Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo dates from the 13th century and is an example of the region’s Romanesque architecture. It preserves 14th-century frescoes as well as a stone high altar. The entrance is also accessible to people with disabilities. The Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista probably dates from the 15th or 16th century, features Romanesque-Gothic architecture and houses a restored 16th-century fresco of the Madonna della Consolazione.

The Museo della Pietra Lavorata is housed in the former Salesian college in Strada in Casentino. Its exhibition is divided into local landscapes and traditional stonework in everyday life, the stone Middle Ages, the stoneworkers of Strada in Casentino and contemporary stone art. In summer, the museum offers stone-carving workshops for children. Three themed stone trails have been established in Strada in Casentino, leading to the area’s most important historical and cultural features connected with stone. The stone trail I SEGNI DELLA STORIA begins at the monumental cemetery of Strada in Casentino and continues to the Pieve di San Martino a Vado.

The stoneworkers of Strada in Casentino represent a local craft tradition. Those still active preserve knowledge of traditional tools and techniques. Castel San Niccolò is also home to the Museo della civiltà castellana, part of the Ecomuseo del Casentino. In the village of Cetica, the Ecomuseo del Carbonaio preserves the memory of a trade that was closely connected with the forests and their resources. This includes two reconstructed wooden huts and a charcoal kiln used for educational and demonstration purposes.

Hiking Landscapes, Products and Events

From Bagni di Cetica, you can reach the extensive summit meadows of Pratomagno, which are a destination for hiking. The Patata Rossa di Cetica is one of Castel San Niccolò’s typical products. At Molino Grifoni, visitors can sample the products offered for sale. The regular events of the Ecomuseo del Carbonaio include the potato festival, also known as Festa a Cetica. Every year on July 2, a procession in honor of the Madonna takes place at the Oratorio della Visitazione della Madonna. The Mostra della Pietra Lavorata is held every two years at the beginning of September; stoneworkers and sculptors from all over Italy take part.
