Cortina: Garliano Castle and Pratomagno

The ruins of Garliano Castle are located near Cortina; Pratomagno remains separate from them as an independent landscape feature. Both topics represent distinct points of interest and can be considered independently of one another. The castle complex represents traces of cultural history, while Pratomagno, as a landscape offering opportunities for walks, forms a separate focal point. The approximate length of around twenty kilometres provides ample scope for planning an individual day on the plateau.

Between Cortina and the ruins of Garliano

A hiking trail to the ruins of Garliano Castle begins at the houses higher up in Cortina. The ruins are located at an altitude of 769 metres above sea level and are scattered across a plateau.

Layout of the castle complex

The castle complex consists of two differently designed sections. The western part is square, measures 30 × 30 metres, and occupies the highest area of the plateau. In the eastern section, a long surrounding wall encloses the area; regularly arranged rooms divide this section and probably served residential or service functions. The west also contains a well-preserved central cistern with a square floor plan and barrel vault. This western section is considered a possible part of a lordly tower residence.

History, names and archaeological traces

The layout of the complex also contributes to its historical interest. Archaeologically investigated in 2009, the castle apparently consists of two structures separated by an internal road. Garliano is documented in 1248 as “villam Garliani” and in 1317 as “castrum Sancti Donati de Garliano”. The castle complex initially belonged to the Guidi counts and later to the municipality of Florence. The ruins of Garliano Castle are also associated with the microtoponym “Castello” near Cortina.

Pratomagno and the museum

The plateau with the ruins of Garliano Castle overlooks the Fosso della Magnana. For a stay focused on regional history and the relationship between buildings and terrain, this combination of topics is particularly interesting. Independently of this, walks are possible on Pratomagno’s approximately twenty-kilometre-long grassy plateau. Visits to and openings of the Museo della pietra lavorata are possible by prior appointment. Making an appointment in advance turns the museum visit into a separate scheduled activity.
