Fasciano Among Vineyards and Ridges

Fasciano is a small village between the hills of Cortona and Montepulciano. Cantine Faralli, a family-run winery, is located in Località Fasciano. Here, winegrowing and olive oil meet a landscape whose distinctive features can be seen in specific places and along particular routes. If you would like to combine rural landscapes with regional products, Fasciano offers a clearly defined setting.

Ridges with Extensive Views

Fasciano forms part of an exceptional southern ridge system extending from Poggio through Fasciano to Gabbiano Vecchio. Panoramic openings and visual connections between valley floors and hills shape this system. The Fasciano-Gabbiano Vecchio landscape system lies on ridges overlooking the Chianacce reclamation area. The combination of ridges, valley floors and hills remains the defining landscape impression of Fasciano.

A dense network of municipal, local and agricultural roads connects the settlements on the ridges of Fasciano. This network offers significant views of the elements that shape the landscape, as well as of the settlements of Cortona on the horizon. Ridges, open vistas and scattered settlements thus define the appearance of the area.

Winegrowing and Regional Specialties

The vineyards of Cantine Faralli lie at an elevation of 250 to 330 metres above sea level and face north and northwest. The Merlot grapes are harvested entirely by hand, with more than one pass through each vineyard and a green harvest in July. The northern and northwestern orientation is just as much a feature of the vineyards’ specific landscape as their elevation.

Cantine Faralli offers a tour of the vineyards and cellar, followed by a wine tasting and local culinary specialties. The winery also produces extra virgin olive oil by cold-pressing hand-picked olives. Its agricultural character is therefore reflected not only in the vines, but also in another agricultural product. For food and wine enthusiasts, Fasciano can thus be experienced through both wine and olive oil.

Family History and Historical Traces

For five generations, the Faralli family leased and farmed the Poggio Martino Maggiore estate in Località Fasciano before acquiring it in the 1950s. In 2002, Andrea and Juri Faralli expanded the operation by planting new vineyards and making extensive innovative changes to the cellar. Another historical trace can be found in Cortona’s statute of 1325, which resolved to build three new boats for the ports of Fasciano, Foiano and Creti. The acquisition in the 1950s and the expansion in 2002 mark two distinct points in this development.

The Chiesa di San Biagio is a monument in Case Sparse Fasciano, Cortona, Arezzo. Podere Biagio is also located in Località Fasciano: a traditional Tuscan farmhouse with a large panoramic garden and a private pool.
