Discover Pescaia: Culture, Trails and Regional Traditions

Pescaia brings together tangible connections to history, cycling culture and the trails of Valdichiana. The route of the 103rd Circuito di Cesa – Trofeo S. Lucia passes through Pescaia. The Fattoria di Canfoiano is also connected with the Cesa–Pescaia area. Whether you want to shape your stay around culture, landscapes or historic bicycles, you will find a range of themes here to help plan your trip.

Culture and History around Pescaia

The Museo della Poesia in Cesa opened in 2000 in the crypt of an old church as a unique cultural venue. It hosts exhibitions, cultural gatherings and conferences. The combination of a historic church interior and a contemporary cultural program gives this destination a distinctive profile.

Castello di Marciano has a trapezoidal military structure dating from the late 13th or early 14th century. Torre di Marciano houses a model of the Battle of Scannagallo from 1554. The Battle of Marciano, also known as the Battle of Scannagallo, was fought on August 2, 1554, in the countryside around Marciano.

The artistic and historical heritage also includes the Chiesa dei Santi Stefano e Andrea. It preserves an altarpiece by Bartolomeo della Gatta depicting the Madonna and Child with Saints. Torre di Marciano also leads to a panoramic walkway ending at a terrace with views across Valdichiana.

Cycling and Hiking Trails

The Sentiero della Bonifica along the Canale Maestro della Chiana is a trail approximately 60 kilometers long between Arezzo and Chiusi. It follows a historic service road for the canal and lock system dating from the grand-ducal period. The route therefore combines a landscape experience with the history of water management in Valdichiana.

The Sentiero delle Fonti is directly connected to the Sentiero della Bonifica and forms part of a network of trails for slow tourism, cycling and hiking. The signposted route can be used by hikers, families, trekking enthusiasts and cycling tourists. The Fonte Via Pescaia belongs to the Percorso Fonti.

The Sentiero delle Fonti provides access to five restored public springs. They are connected with the water supply, social interaction and the cultural memory of the local communities. For planning purposes, this trail can therefore be considered from both a landscape and a cultural-historical perspective.

Historic Bicycles and Regional Cuisine

The Chianina Ciclostorica takes place in June as a historic bicycle race on the white roads of Valdichiana. Together with the Circuito di Cesa – Trofeo S. Lucia, which passes through Pescaia, it creates a clear connection to the region’s cycling history. The area’s trails therefore appeal not only to hikers but also to visitors interested in classic cycling culture.

At the Festa a Cesa, Ocio Chianino is the centerpiece of the menu. It is a goose raised and prepared according to the traditions of Valdichiana. This regional specialty is part of a festival where the local food culture can be experienced firsthand.

Practical Information for Your Visit

The Chiesa vecchia is open only on special occasions. This is part of planning a local visit, along with the differing characters of the trails, towers, churches and cultural sites. Pescaia thus provides a starting point for a trip combining historical themes, activity and regional traditions.
