History that remains present in the townscape

Marciano Della Chiana brings together fortified history, religious art and regional traditions with paths and viewpoints in the Valdichiana.

At the Torre di Marciano, a permanently publicly accessible, true-to-scale model depicts the Battle of 2 August 1554. The Percorso delle fonti dell’acqua in Marciano della Chiana leads to five places connected with everyday life, collective memory and the history of the area. Both destinations offer a different way of approaching history: one through a concrete model, the other through places associated with water and community life.

Fortress, church and historical events

The Castello di Marciano was equipped with a fortress, walls and a tower between the late 13th and early 14th centuries. Today, the restored Castello di Marciano houses a multifunctional cultural centre. This structure therefore brings together medieval fortifications and cultural use.

The Chiesa dei Santi Stefano e Andrea is located in the upper part of the historic centre of Marciano della Chiana. Its original structural elements were remodelled in the 18th century. Inside, the church houses a panel by Bartolomeo della Gatta depicting the Madonna and Child with Saints. Those interested in architecture and art will therefore find several periods layered in a single place: the original structure, the later remodelling and the painter’s work.

The Battle of Scannagallo, also known as the Battle of Marciano, was fought in the area around Marciano on 2 August 1554.

Valdichiana, wine and bicycles

A viewing platform at the Torre di Marciano leads to a terrace overlooking the Valdichiana.

Marciano della Chiana is one of the places along the Strada del Vino Terre di Arezzo. La Chianina Ciclostorica provides a different regional focus: held in June, the race for historic bicycles runs along the white roads of the Valdichiana. Cultural history and bicycles meet here through different aspects of the landscape and its use.

Practical guidance for routes

On stage 7 of the Sentiero della Bonifica, after passing the infrastructure, there is a drinking-water fountain and a table with two wooden benches serving as a simple rest area. This specific provision is a useful point of reference if you are considering a hiking or walking stage based on the available rest facilities.

When choosing accommodation in Marciano Della Chiana, your planned daily activities can provide a useful point of reference. You can take into account cultural highlights around the Castello, church and Torre, as well as the wine tradition, cycling event or the paths of the Sentiero della Bonifica.
