Stia combines a historic town centre with museums and events; castles are located nearby, while mountains can be found in the surrounding area. Along the banks of the Torrente Staggia, near its confluence with the Arno, the town preserves characteristic sections of its older urban layout. Historic Centre and Buildings

The historic centre of Stia is grouped around the arcaded Piazza Tanucci. The Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta dates from the 12th century. The Palagio Fiorentino was an old residence of the Guidi counts. Together with the older urban layout along the Torrente Staggia, these buildings and squares shape Stia’s historic character, without reducing the town to a single building.

Museums of Skiing, Forests and Wool

In Stia’s historic centre, the Museo dello sci di Stia is housed in atmospheric premises. It belongs to a group of museums whose facilities are connected architecturally and thematically. The Museo del Bosco e della Montagna focuses on a different subject: it contains information and material evidence of traditional small-scale forestry industries. Stia’s former wool factory also houses the Museo dell'Arte della Lana. In Stia, you can therefore encounter subjects ranging from winter sports and forestry work to wool processing.

Planetarium and Rocks

The Planetario del Parco is located near Stia’s historic centre. Beneath a dome, it reconstructs the night sky and helps visitors identify constellations and navigate by the stars. The exhibition there compares rocks from space with terrestrial rocks. These include meteorite samples as well as samples originating mainly from the Apennines.

Events Featuring Crafts and Tradition

The Biennale del Ferro Battuto takes place in Stia every two years. In summer, “Ci vuole il tempo che ci vuole” is a handicraft event with a market and workshops held in collaboration with Stia’s Museo dell'Arte della Lana. In May, this museum hosts the traditional Festa del Battilano.

Castello di Porciano and Romena Castle are located near Stia; Castello dei Conti Guidi is situated in the surrounding area. Each of these destinations is a castle.
