Discover Subbiano: Riverbanks, Cultural Heritage and Pilgrimage Route

Subbiano combines the history of the Arno Valley with tranquil landscapes, longstanding traditions and important cultural sites. Along the left bank of the Arno, old buildings and former watermills stand one after another. As a result, the town is revealed not only through individual sights, but also through its historic riverbank, shaped by past uses and regional architectural traditions.

Culture among Churches, Castles and Archaeology

The Chiesa di Santa Maria della Visitazione was built in the early years of the 13th century. Inside are a fresco of the Coronation of the Virgin by Giovanni Bassan, a Deposition from the Cross by the same artist above the church portal, and a wooden crucifix from the 17th century in the apse. In addition, the Centro di Documentazione della Cultura Archeologica preserves archaeological finds from the Subbiano area dating from the 7th century BC to the 14th century. Two exhibition rooms display finds from archaeological excavations in Subbiano and Capolona.

The wider municipal area also brings visitors into contact with different historical periods. Castello di Valenzano was reconstructed from 1870 onwards in Neo-Gothic and Neo-Romantic forms, with elements of medieval Sienese architecture; its complex includes the small church of Santa Maria a Valenzano. The Chiesa di Santa Lucia in Poggio d’Acona dates from the 13th century. In Castelnuovo, the castle chapel was decorated with frescoes in the early years of the 16th century by a pupil of Don Agnolo di Lorentino. Near Ponte Caliano, the Torre Santa Flora recalls the medieval safeguarding of the river and road: the defensive tower was built between the 12th and 13th centuries to protect the Arno and the road.

Forests, Ridges and Trails

For those interested in nature and hiking, the Alpe di Catenaia offers a varied landscape with oak, chestnut and centuries-old beech forests, the Prati della Regina and Monte Castello. The Alpe di Catenaia can be reached on foot via signposted trails from Falciano; the routes pass through forests and along ridges. Casa al Taverni and Fonte al Baregno are accessible by car. Those wishing to combine different ways of getting around will also find a railway connection in Subbiano: the Arezzo–Stia line connects the town with Arezzo and the upper Casentino.

Mills, Chestnuts and Regional Food Traditions

In the hamlet of Falciano in the municipality of Subbiano, there is a characteristic mill complex that can be traced back to the 16th century. The Mattesini family’s watermills in Falciano are well preserved, and their stone millstones are still operational. Vogognano is an important chestnut-growing area; it is also home to old chestnut drying huts. A continuing local tradition is the blessing of animals and bread in honour of Saint Anthony, followed by a traditional communal lunch. At Castello di Valenzano, the Ristorante al Castello has a panoramic terrace and a wine cellar with wines from the region.

Pilgrimage Route and Events

The Via Romea Germanica passes through Subbiano and is considered a historic pilgrimage route along which pilgrims from Scandinavia and Central and Eastern Europe travelled to Rome. In July, the Centro di Documentazione della Cultura Archeologica offers annual opportunities to explore and communicate archaeological topics in greater depth as part of the Notti dell’Archeologia. The traditional Festa dell’Uva in Subbiano is celebrated in September and offers an opportunity to sample local products. The Cena Medievale nel Borgo is a July event featuring jesters, musicians, performers and typical dishes from the Casentino.
